I don’t own this set but I did skim threw the manual. If your looking for a thin TV to hang on the wall then this Vizo LCD is a low cost 1080P. This set does have a QAM tuner so that you can watch in the clear HDTV and Standard definition channels from your cable company without a digital cable box. You will need to rent or purchase a Digital Cable box to subscribe to HDTV premium programming from your cable company. The QAM tuner only tunes in unencrypted programming.
If you want a better picture quality a rear projector LCOS or DLP will provide you with better picture quality then a LCD. The Sony 50 inch SXRD KDS-50A2000 is available for around $1600-$1700 for final delivery price over the Internet from several companies. The Sony has 10:000:1 contrast ratio with 2.5ms response time. The Vizo GV47L has only a 1600:1 contrast ratio and 8MS response time. The Sony SXRD picture performance does come with a small catch, around every 8000 hours one will need to replace a $249 projector bulb. Also it is strongly recommended that on front and rear projectors to purchase a power backup UPS to protect the life span of the bulb. When one turns off a projector a fan runs for a few minutes to cool down the bulb. If one was watching a movie and the power company had a power outage then if someone does not have a UPS the bulb will age faster.

Interesting that the XBR2 models have a 4000 hour recommended replacement time. Is that a real difference in the bulbs, or do both bulbs degrade over 4000 and the XBR2 is the model that gives you the first replacement?

What is the LCD backlight uniformity and intensity curve over time?

Some are moving toward an white LED array as a backlight.
