Default "THE SIGNAL" (2007) reviews/reactions thread

The Signal (Magnolia, 2007) been listed for quite some time now as being released on June 10. I saw the trailer for this movie a while back and it looked intriguing. I'm a fan of the horror genre and I am considering this as a blind buy.

I was just curious if anyone here has seen this movie and I wanted to know your thoughts. Would it be a good blind buy or was this movie a total waste?

I saw it in theaters and I had mixed feelings. I would rent before buying. I already saw it once and I need to see it again before I even decide if I like it or not.

Thanks, I may try renting it first, although my addictive personality tells me I will buy it first, and if I don't like it, I will hate myself later.

I liked it, but it is a little strange since the movie is broken up into three segments and each segment is directed by a different person. The first segment is pretty violent and totally serious. The second segment (keep in mind it is the same story line also, so it the story keeps flowing, but has a totally different tone) is pretty funny, but also kinda violent too. The third segment is more of a love story.

The basic plot is girl is having an affair with this guy. He convinces her to leave her husband and run away with him. They agree to meet at the train station at a certain terminal. While this is happening, the signal is being broadcast over TV, radio and phones (including cell). It causes people who watch it or listen to it long enough to go crazy, kill people etc.

Default "THE SIGNAL" (2007) reviews/reactions thread

Got it in today, figured id share some stuff.

Movie wise : Freaking great movie, its very creepy, but has some great humor in it as well, not to the point of distracting from the eerieness. Theres at least 10 great death scenes in the movie, and left me wanting more. There is a LOT OF VIOLENCE THOUGH, so odds are your kids won't be watching it. But it is a really fun title to play for a group on a saturday. THe plot is really out there though, and difficult to explain, think "Invasion of the bodysnatchers with televisions" 4.5/5

Video Quality - I hate grain, I really do. The first part (Transmission 1) is riddled with it, in fact theres not a scene that doesn't have it Transmissions 2/3 look much better though, no blemishes. Overall, its not a demo material disc, but its not terrible either. 3/5

Audio - The rears and fronts are used extensively throughout the film, and every death and blood splatter you hear like you are right there watching it (which wouldve been a damn cool future). Its a 5.1 DTS track, so its surprising that a no name film got the nice hi-def audio track, and its great. Its nothing like "SUNSHINE" or any other top rate audio film, but it still does what it should do for a movie. 4.5/5

Extras - Havent watched them yet, only just finished the movie, and I have college in the morning

Overall - 4/5. (Not an average) its a great movie, thats moderately priced (19.95 on amazon, was 18.95). You probably wont watch it again, unless you want some good laughs and some great death scenes. The video is a bit of a disappointment, but the audio and overall movie make up for it.

Rent it, or if you are a fan of horror movies with an odd plot and just plain gore scenes, then pick it up. Odds are, you'll enjoy it.

I think I have already stated somewhere on this board that I didn't like it, I completely understood everything about it.

Yet it proved to be dull and boring in my eyes, I didn't much like the acting either.

My sentiments exactly!!

I found myself checking the remaining time several times to determine if I could endure this movie until the end.

I would just like to point out that I am not hating on the movie just to hate, it really was bad and I just couldn't watch it all, I think I ended up skipping some of it just to make it end.

I rented this film not knowing what to expect, and I really enjoyed it! Not your usual horror film. I like how it is broken down into three stories, each directed by different directors. As far as PQ goes, inconsistant and meh, but that didn't detract from the fun.

I agree, its not a bad PQ, but its just not consistent to get a decent grade.. going from grain-non grain-grain-non grain-grain got incredibly annoying

Default Great movie, okay PQ

I think this was a really good movie. I rented it first because I knew it was a low- budget film and was fearing the absolute worst. I enjoyed it so much that I went out the next day and purchased a BD version of it. Although PQ is definitely not demo- worthy, it is still superior to the SD transfer.

While I can see why people may not like it, I think it's best horror movie to be made in the last few years, and is definitely the most original horror movie made in awhile. Over the last 10 years or so, horror movies have generally fallen into 3 trendy categories that have long outlived their usefulness:

1) Americanized versions of Japanese (and other foreign) horror movies
("The Ring," "The Grudge," "The Strangers" (American remake of
the superior French movie "Them,") etc.
2) Rehashing of classic horror movies ("The Omen," "Halloween,"
"The Hitcher," "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," "Hills Have Eyes," etc)
Majority of the remakes were remarkably bad, but "Hills Have Eyes"
was good.
3) Torture Porn (All 27 "Saw" movies, "Hostel," "Wolf Creek," etc)
(great at first, but now rehashing the same stuff over and
over again and offers little to no plot development)

I put "The Signal" in the same category of other low- budget (yet original and well made) movies such as "Cabin Fever," "Shaun of the Dead," "Dog Soldiers" and my personal fave- "The Descent" (which is incredible on BD, by the way!) Overall, highly recommended!

I read somewhere it was shot in like a week? And for less than 100k.. so for a movie like this to be this good was pretty damn shocking @_@

I can't say I cared for this one much either. I didn't know it was shot by three directors, but my brother and I were really wondering how this made it into theaters. We remember it playing in our area, and we felt there was a pretty positive response to it, so we were looking forward to seeing it on BD.

Within the first 15 minutes, we were both convinced NetFlix had sent us the wrong "Signal". Like maybe there were some other older movies called Signal, and they had sent us the wrong one. Well, that wasn't the case. They sent us the right one. It was a bad british horror comedy thing. It is hard to describe, but we didn't care for it. Like previously mentioned, the movie is something like an hour and 45 minutes and about half way through you are thinking to yourself, is this thing over yet.
