Yes - I'd like an option on players to view 2.35:1 movies using the full 1.78:1 screen 15 17.44%
No - I don't want such an option on players 66 76.74%
I'd like 2.35:1 movies to be stored anamorphically for higher quality with the above option 14 16.28%
I'd like it if Blu-ray players had motion interpolation too 3 3.49%
3D movies/capable players would be good also 8 9.30%

Would you like there to be an option on Blu-ray players to zoom 2.35:1 movies to fill the 1.78:1 screen (by cutting the picture on left & right)?

Sorry for the discrepancy between the title of the thread and the poll (it's meant to say 2.35:1 in the title - though there could be an option to view both 2.39:1 and 2.35:1 in full 1.78:1)

No, but the only seeming place that Blu-ray went wrong was its lack of an anamorphic mode for alternate aspect ratios.

Would never used it, because it would distort the orignal aspect ration.

I'm talking about cropping on the sides then scaling to fit the 1.78:1 screen (or using anamorphic encoding which should be even better) - neither should distort things so that people would look really tall/thin or short/fat (assuming players understood the anamorphic option in the later case)

Also, it's just an extra option - it's not like people have to use it if they don't want to

Terrible idea. No need for it. OAR only.

*Sigh* here come the "OAR only" snobs. I'd like to be given the ability to choose where the BD player pan and scan to the full 16:9 or to present in the original OAR. I'm not suggesting releasing only 16:9 or releasing separate versions for OAR and 16:9.

There is nothing wrong with giving people the option to present their purchase/rental in the way they prefer.

Stupid question coming up:

If a movie is in 1080p, and 2.40:1, is it correct that you are losing some of that resolution on regular WS HDTVs? Are projectors the only way (presumably) to get the full 1080 lines?

Not even projectors will get you 1080 lines of picture detail on 2.40:1 movies (unless you are counting black lines). 2.40 movies are currently encoded with approx 280 black lines in the picture on Blu-ray (slightly less black lines if the aspect ratio is really 2.39:1)

Thanks. I was wondering if the black lines were part of the 1080 or not.

Movies are shot in a certain aspect ratio for a reason as dictated by the filmmaker. It's like giving people an option to watch the movie with a different soundtrack. It's not the real movie anymore.

I'm looking forward to the day when pan & scan movie presentation is dead and all movies are shown on TV at least in 16:9 if not their OAR.

We already get that option often - director's/cast commentaries

if you really want to miss out on part of the intended image then just use the zoom function on your TV.

I'd like the option, while for the first time I see a movie usually I like to have it in it's original look so I can see EVERYTHING, but if I'm tired or what ever I'd like to be able to see the whole screen covered with picture which is easier on the eyes imo. But my bluray remote has an option to "zoom" and with most blu rays looking so good it still looks fine zoomed in, but with DVDs that are upconverted, they usually look pretty icky when zoomed on.

Having the option there would be nice for those who want it. I wouldn't bother myself. I am used to black bars, having watched DVDs on a 19" computer CRT for a few years.

Default Just thinking about it

"Just thinking about watching a Widescreen movie like "Ben-Hur" in Pan & Scan gives me the hebe-jeebies."
