Default 160GB Uncharted: Drake's Fortune PS3 Bundle

Sony Corp.'s U.S. game division on Wed. said that it will retail a new 160GB Playstation 3 bundle for this Nov.

The limited edition bundle will include the title Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, a Playstation Network voucher for Pain, and a Dualshock 3 Wireless Controller for $499.99.

"As Playstation Network continues to evolve with our recently launched video delivery service and more exclusive games, PS3 owners are demanding more storage capacity," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA.

"Consumers also are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard drive. The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand in a compelling bundle that delivers significant value."

According to NPD Group Inc., the PS3 posted sales of 224,900 units in July U.S. sales to represent a 99 percent hardware sales growth from the year prior to date.

Sony this month cited the popularity of the PS3 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle, which has held a sold out status at retailers including Walmart.com and Bestbuy.com.

Additionally, the PS3 outsold Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, which posted sales of 204,800 units in July to rank as the No. 5 video game hardware offering for the month.

Interesting, but I don't need a 3rd at this point. Even though the package offers a good value, I'm not sure that anything that moves the price up will actually entice many new buyers. It will appeal to some, but going lower is the only way to the mass market... unless I am way off-base, which is possible.

Default 160gb Ps3

Do you guys think this is the new PS3 without the Media Card Slots and PS2 Compatibility just with a really really big HDD or is this the original 80GB PS3 with double the storage capacity?

I'm guessing that it won't have B/C, but I could be wrong.

Most likely this will essentially be the 40GB unit with a bigger drive or a new base system entirely if they will be able to get the die size down even more for this unit (doesn't seem likely to me.)

Anyway, I'm glad they are finally selling units with even bigger drives. But at this price point I think they should have gone up to a massive 320GB drive to put the XBOX360 to shame in terms of perceived value. Especially considering you can get a 320GB HDD for less than $100 retail. Still, with Uncharted bundled in this would be a good deal for a new PS3 buyer but probably not if you already own the game or have no interest.

the only way i would be excited about this is if it did come back with the backwards compatability and the card slots and the extra USB ports, i had one of the 80GB models with all that but the BD drive quit on me so i had to get one of the 40GB models instead (unfortunate timing to happen in between runs of the 80GB versions). but if i wanted the bigger storage capacity, i would just go buy a bigger HDD and install it myself like another poster mentioned

The MotorStorm bundle really helped build awareness for the franchise and this should help Uncharted 2.

Unfortunately, it looks like this is just the non-BC model with a much larger hard drive since the official specs seem to match the 40GB except for the hard drive size.

Makes me glad I bought an MGS4 bundle to back up my trusty 60 while they're still available.

im planning on getting a 2nd ps3 around christmas/boxing day...
if this has BC then no contest, this gets my money

But if it doesnt have BC, then ill have to think long and hard over whether I want this or the MGS4 bundle (hopefully they'll still be around)

The games are moot since I already own both.

Sony has made it clear in recent communications that they were trimming the PS3 line down to one spec model. That way, they lower costs and reduce consumer confusion over "which gig size had which feature." Now the only differentiator will be hard drive size.

I am really tempted to run out and scrounge up a MGS4 bundle in order to have a backup PS3 with PS2 B/C and SACD playback. I'll be really bummed if my 60 gig model ever ends up dying on me.

You can always just buy a larger harddrive instead of a new ps3.

This is probably a simple question that i should already know, but alas, i have forgotten. Will the new 160 GB bundle be backwords comp? I know the 40GB was not. I can not remember if sony just got rid of that feature on the 40GB or if it was a action across the board.

Why spend 500 dollars on the bundle when you can buy a bigger HDD, the game and the controller for less then the 499.99 price of the bundle???

Why would they put out a 160GB bundle in November, and not put it together with Resistance 2? A HUGE game for Sony and they are putting the new consol with a game that has been out a year?

I would rather upgrade my HDD to 320GB and not have a second copy of that game.

Bundles I would buy a second PS3 (give my old PS3 to my folks)
R2
KZ2 (little late)
Re5 (little late)
Fallout 3

MAYBE
Little Big Planet
Bioshock

No way I am buying a bundle with Drakes. Not for any reason.

Anyway, maybe they will make a better bundle. I hope so.

Hitachi and Seagate have some very nice 300GB, 7200 RPM, low power 2.5" SATA drives. I think I'll choose that option for upgrading my current version before buying new. Mine has the backward compatibility that I do wish to keep.

Anyone tried those drives? I put the Hitachi in my macbook pro and it claims to use less power than the 200GB version because it uses one less platter. It's much quieter than the previous model as well. I can't imagine it putting out more heat considering lower power and less mass.
