Default Puzzle Quest Challenge of the Warlords

Ive finally found a psn game that I actually enjoyed and perhaps totally addicted to.

Puzzle Quest Challenge of the Warlords game, had I known that it was Warlords Warlords.. I would not have waited so long to get it.

Warlords, dates back to a set of turn based fantasy strategy games called Warlords which contained 4 games and later branched out to Warlords battlecry which is a rts in with has 3 games under that title.

This puzzle game exists within that same fantasy universe, all the familiar countries and some of the familiar voices and sound effects brought me back.

Its a much more solid game then I thought with a mix of puzzle/strategy/rpg into a single game.

The way the battles work in the puzzle game is that each player takes a turn by switching two pieces on the puzzle map, you have all the time to think out your move, but your move must cause a interaction of one of the moved pieces to connect with another 2 other pieces of the same type.

If you make a move that connects to 4 pieces or indirectly causes a object to connect to 4 like pieces you get to take another turn.

When the connected pieces terminate more pieces may fall into places and terminate themselfs if they connect with similar object.

The following is a list of pieces on the puzzle map.

Purple Star = experience point
Blue ball = Blue mana
Red ball = Red mana
Yellow ball = yellow mana
Green ball = green mana
skulls = (When terminates becomes an attack dealing out damage based on your characters weapon and stats. 3 skulls are needed to dull full damage if by some means a single skull is terminated it only counts as 1 damage)

Wild cards = wild cards can terminate with any mana color as long as you have two of the same color touching it, it usually has a multiplier such as 5x which means when it terminates you 5 + 2 which = 7

Special Skull = Has a modifier that adds to the damage, when it terminates it also destroys all pieces next to it and you gain any benefits as if the pieces were naturally terminated. *Knights can use there thrust skill to terminate this without combing it with another skull.*

When you create a hero you choose a name a profession and a portrait.

Each class has access to different skills, knights start off with thrust a skill that cost x red and x blue mana that lets them destroy a single piece on the puzzle map.
Later they get skills that destroy all the purple stars on the map, to turning any piece type into purple stars, to dealing direct damage.

The game map is set on a world of warlords and the game starts in the nation of breton.

When you level up your character gets access to new spells and distributes points across the characters skills.

I admit I had vivid dreams of being trapped in the game last night during my dreams which made me want to play the game more.. anyway ;P...

I have this on "the other system" and I loved it. It's a great game.

I think the PSN has the expansion as well.

It is based on a rpg strategy game universe, meaning they have alot of lore and elements that they can cover.

It uses the similar skill system and some of the old professions, the world map is based on geographical locations of cities and locations from the battlecry universe.

The only sad thing is that alot of the races from battlecry did not make it into this puzzle game in fact its a humans only... which was slightly disheartening.

I have to say its a excellent game, and best use of one my psn cards, in fact the only thing ive discovered on the psn store that actually deserved to be purchased in my own thinking.

I bought the DS version first and then got the "other" version for to play at home on a big TV and because I wanted some achievements.

Wish the PSN version had come out sooner, so I could have it on the PS3. But buying the game 3 times would be a bit foolish.

Bah, surely it's no more foolish than owning three or more copies of the same movie, like me owning the VHS/DVD/Blu-ray of Pearl Harbor.

Broken how? I pretty much finished the game with the knight or warrior or whatever and was thinking of branching out.

The Wizard didn't compare to the Warrior in terms of brokenness.

Having said that, the expansion added turn delays before you can use an ability again, which de-breaks a lot. Still not perfect, and you can still kill someone with an uber ability before they get to go.

Note: When I say turn breaks I mean number of times it actually has to go to your opponent and back to re-use an ability. You can just get 3 extra turns in a row to re-use uber-broken ability.

PQ:CotW is one of the best puzzle games ever. Everytime I start playing it I won't stop for hours, and I won't even realize I'm doing it.

I was total addicted, for quite awhile, to this game on my PSP! Don't think I'll purchase it a second time, but if you haven't played it, its a lot of fun.

I've played the PC demo and loved this - but I keep reading about a PSP version bug where you can't scroll past 6 spells and something about companions not being able to use their abilities....

PC demo ends at level 7, so I have no idea how those are supposed to work.

For those that have the PSP version downloaded - has this been fixed?

For those that have the UMD version, is it a deal breaker or can you still play it without getting too mad?

Was it the warrior that had the one turn kill that turned the whole board Red? I forget, I played it a while back on the DS and after I beat it I stopped messing with it.

The warrior had the capability to instantly turn half the board into skulls. Add in some damage bonuses, make it so you had as much red mana as possible to start the battle, and enough to use it, and most battles were start->DeathBringer->Game over.

It was just silly.

Shin, thanks for the review link.

I will likely get this for PS3, but does anyone know if its the same version for psp, or is it the older one Challenge of the Warlords that is available for download.

The older one had bugs, which is sounds like Challenge of the Plague Lord doesn't. It's just not clear to me if that is what is being offered for the PSP.

It should be the same game as the one available for the PSP.

I downloaded this because I heard it was like "Bejeweled", and it is. I love it and am very addicted, but I find that I have no idea what I'm doing...

Some questions, if anyone who knows this game better can help me out...

1:
I randomly created my character (I think he was a thief or something - I don't remember). I didn't even know why picking one character over another mattered. I'm so far deep in the game now that I don't think it's worth starting over with a "better" character. Is it? Why does your character matter?...

2:
I have no idea which skill points to upgrade with my experience points, as I have no idea what they each do. I've just been dispersing everything out evenly, and I haven't really noticed much difference in my performance based on my level increases (except for more Life Points in battle as my levels increase)...

3:
When I'm combining Runes to make (I guess) spells or something (I'm not even sure), how do I use/apply them? They appear underneath "Miscellaneous" in my list of items, but I can't select any of the stuff I've combined to create.

4:
When in battle, to the left of each mana is a thing that looks like a colored shield (the color of the mana it's next to) with "0%" next to it. What is that, and what does the percentage indicate? Also, how you do increase that percentage? I think I'm pretty far in the game, and they're all still at 0%.

4:
Any general strategy tips? Armor, helms, weapons, I should buy and/or have equipped? Best spells to use? Things I shouldn't waste time with? Etc.

Thanks to anyone who can answer these questions. I've never been so confused with something and so addicted to it at the same time!!!
