Strictly a hunch, but I suspect we won't hear anything definitive about Trek titles on BD until closer to the release of the next feature film. Hopefully the floodgates will open shortly thereafter...

i was doing some googling and saw some similar conjectures - that would make sense...now that i am hooked on Blu Rays i'm surprised at how few old titles i would go purchase are out...i'm sure that will change with the increase in BR sales, etc - but was still surprised

The sooner the better Star Trek Blu-rays (all of them) are released I will be HAPPY.

I really hope they all come out at the same time. Having to wait 6-12 months between releases would drive me nuts.

I agree. If they have to space them out, I would rather have all of the original cast movies in one block and all of the TNG movies in another. (Maybe one when the next movie hits theaters and the next when it hits Blu-ray).

Oh, yes, and I want both cuts of TWoK on my BD, thank you very much.

I recently watched the DVDs of the first four Star Trek films, and while I agree that we need to see them come to Blu-Ray, I also think that if they have to take their time to restore them, then I'll be happy to wait.

Just a prediction, but I am going to say April 2009 will see the Trek films on Blu to tie into the new Jeff Abrams film, or maybe October with the release of the new film on Blu.

My guess is, Paramount will take a year to release them, one or two at a time on bare bones blu-rays. Then after they've released them all they will offer up the double dips with new bonus material. That's the plan they used for the DVDs. Also, I would expect the restored and hi-def upgrades of the three seasons of the original series on blu soon since they already have the encodes..

I have spoken to Lowry Digital Images about restorations on the Trek films. Lowry, the same company that restored the James Bond Saga, restored Star Trek: The Voyage Home, and Star Trek: First Contact. Although these are all brand new transfers, not all of them have been cleaned by Lowry. Restorations are complete and the release order is waiting to be given.

What we can expect to see released on Blu-ray is a mixed bag of all of Trek. Star Trek: Enterprise seasons 1-4, JJ Abrams' Star Trek, the first 10 films, Star Trek The animated Series which was remastered to HD resolution, and Star Trek: TOS-R.

Sadly, the expenses to remaster my favorite series, TNG would be too much for CBS-D to accomplish. That means no DS9, and VOY too. I would have loved to see some of the DS9 battles in HD. DAMN!

First Contact and Generations in Blu Ray would look awesome imo ( I know that Generations isn't loved much by Trek Fans, but it has a special place in my heart and is imo one of the better Trek films).

Yeah, over at thedigitalbits.com, they mentioned that Paramount was working on remastering the Trek films, as well as shooting new extras for it. So probably around the time of the J.J. Abrams film's release we'll be seeing them.

If it's a good price, then I may pick up all six at once, but if they're available separately, I think I'll only pick up THE MOTION PICTURE and THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY. Those two were my personal favorites of the first six with the original cast. The movies were how I got into STAR TREK, and I watched them all out of order, and I saw WRATH OF KHAN last, so maybe because it was spoiled for me that WOK didn't really have much of an impact on me. I actually consider it to be a bit overrated. I thought TMP was more in tune with what Roddenberry originally had in mind for TREK and had a very 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY feel to it, which I loved. And TUC I think perfectly blended allegory and space action together and sent the original cast off on a high note that not even GENERATIONS could diminish.

I actually saw the hd transfer for the first Star Trek film. I'm not sure if is was finished (or cleaned) but it looked really good, although it did make some of the special effects more noticable, but whatever. I cant wait for all these to come out.

The various Trek films need modern scans, digital intermediate treatment and cleanup of any damage to original elements. If that is already happening with some of the films then that's great.

Some HD-quality transfers of the Trek movies already exist, but they may not be of the quality we're growing to expect out of Blu-ray releases. HBO was playing Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan a few days ago in high definition. It looked pretty good. But HD via digital satellite doesn't provide enough of an indicator on the actual quality of the HD master used for that broadcast.

That probably accounts for all the EVEN-numbered Treks (counting First Contact as #8) turning up on PS Network's HD store--
Again, it's no indication of whether they've got disk HD prints or cable HD prints stored away, but we've been seeing a lot of broadcast catalog from Paramount lately, and the complete Trek movies seem to be on the list.

Does that mean the speculation is that there will be no HD TNG ever? Or is it something that will likely comes years down the line when the process is cheaper?

Let me tell you guys all I know regarding Trek Remasters. My company LucidSFX, which I am the Chief Technical Officer of, threw our hats into the Paramount Trek ring in an attempt to secure a possible TNG-R contract. It was dismissed along with several other offers because of the grand expense required to redo 7 season from the film up. SideFX software, the grand daddy of several major studios, was the company attempting to bid on our behalf; ultimately it went nowhere. Maybe I should not use the term bid, because there was no contract up for grabs. We were all more like,"hey, we can do better than CBS-D" "here are our prices, what do you think?" ultimately, TNG-R is not being considered anymore, pending the success of JJ Abrams' "Star Trek." Once Trek becomes a more lucrative franchise again, then TNG-R MIGHT be considered. I have had the honor of talking to John Gross, the CEO of EdenFX, which provided the VFX for "Star Trek: Enterprise." His company along with Atmosphere FX, of "BattleStar Gallactica" fame, lost the TOS-R contracts solely due to cost. From what I gathered, their ideas for a remaster were quite different, and larger, from what we got. Both company's ideas were acceptable to Paramount but John Gross' talks were about cost which ultimately didn't pan out. Paramount decided ultimately on a quick remaster that could be done on the cheap. A lot is riding on JJ Abrams and if Star Trek doesn't work then we may never see any more Trek TV shows in HD. The money has to be there.
