I guess this could go in either the projector discussion, or the HDTV discussion since it applies to both.
I'm curious, other than the difference of size (100" vs 67") what would be the advantage of going the projector route over a 67" LED DLP? Or, what's the advantage of going the 67" TV instead? I'm a few years out from building a true home theater, but I forsee it being a room that gets a lot of use including daily TV watching. Is the projector/screen suitable for daily use, or are the curretn crop of projectors unreasonable for more than the occassional movie? I'm leaning towards the 67" Samsung, mainly due to the bulb replacement issue on projectors and the recurring cost associated with it. But I don't want to exclude a projector (or the 100" screen size) if I'm thinking it's worse than it is. Thanks, Camper |

IMO I would go for the 67" given it is for daily use. I do not have a projector at this time but I cant imagine having to watch everything in the dark. I plan on having a sceen drop in front of my current TV when I have the money and using it just for movies.

Well.... FP systems are a WHOLE different experience, but one thing to keep in mind, is the necessity for darkness.... even with a good projector that performs well in ambient light, are you going to want to watch the weather channel in the morning with your coffee in practically COMPLETE DARKNESS????
Probably not....... As far as bulb replacement, we're talking $300 or so every 3-4 years for most people.... I'd say it's a "non-issue" If you can't get a smaller LCD/Plasma to go behind a screen (that you can raise obviously) then I'd say for daily viewing, a large DLP would be better. There is nothing quite like having a projector (I say that as mine still has that "new projector smell" ![]() Projectors are like sports cars..... FUN FUN FUN, and great at what they do, but for "family time" or the trip to the grocery store and back, or in a snow-storm, they just aren't as practical as a 4 door sedan. |

Cool, thanks everyone.
Yeah, I would LOVE the true theater experience but cost is certainly a factor. Getting a new big screen TV AND a projector, screen, and all the 'stuff' along with it would be a very hard sell to my wife. Definitely sounds like a reasonable alternative, and something to consider for future expansion, but it does sound like the TV would be the way to go. The big trick would be trying to make it look like a screen instead of a TV, but I'm sure I could design around it.... camper |

No...you don't want a standard lamp-based DLP set; not worth dealing with lamp replacements every couple/few years. I have last year's 61" LED DLP and it is a wonderful set...the 67" is even better of course, but coulda-shoulda-woulda...yada yada yada... You won't be unhappy in the least with LED.

Having read some of the opinions - I would have to concour that u should have 2 systems if u gots the room and it sounds like u gots.
For myself I did the 2 system BUT with a twist - I made my own projector customized to my 20' screen - and yet i use the 62" for gaming news even movies that are say docu style where size dont matter. The bulbs are only $30 after taxes and have a life of 10,000 hrs - that for outlasts any $150 + bulb that is @ 3000hrs at half brightness. For me I didnt want to spenda fortune in the projector ($2500+) BUT i still wanted something that had balls. I found this kit that u make from scratch and since u make ur own - u use a lens that is proportuante to the room. It took a couple of tries but at the end I have something that you cant purchase off the shelf with parts that are inexpensive to replace ie: bulb |

Please do provide a picture of this 20' image you're able to throw with a "homemade" projector????? I'd love to see the lumens you can achieve with a $30 bulb too........ |

As other have said, there is simply nothing like front projection. I would recommend at least 100". I currently have 100", but if I was doing it over, I would definitely go with 120". Next to a front projection system a 67" TV is laughable.
My setup has a small (32") LCD TV on the wall. Mounted in the ceiling is an remote controlled screen that drops down in front of the small TV. Go for it!!! |

I'm sure you mean 200" and not 20'. Still, I can't imagine that homebrew system looking any good. |

Theoretically... the rest of the tv should wear out before the bulbs do. In reality? They've been out what? A little over a year? So we really don't know for sure yet. However, I have seen any reports at all yet of the bulbs going out so it looks good so far. Keeping my fingers crossed that they are as long lasting as expected. I've had a few LCD's, my first was an LCD-RP back in 2001? My mom has a nice Samsung plasma. I like the picture quality on my LED DLP better than any of them. (But truthfully I haven't run even simple calibrations on my mothers plasma, just did some eyeball adjustments.) |

If your room is dark enough go front projection. Cost have gone done dramatically this past year. The new panasonic ae3000 could be had for around $2500 and a screen could be as cheap as a 100 bucks if you build it yourself. The panasonic is no cheap low end projector either.
I myself have a 106" tensioned electric screen with a mitsubishi hc7000 which costed me about $4,600 for the full set up. Certainly cheaper then a 50" samsung 9 series or what not. The bulb life on the mitsubishi is rated for 5000 hours on low lamp mode. With 5 hours a dayx7days a week would last me about 2.7 years. Either or 35 hours a week is way to much TV time. My room is not light controlled so I have a 46" LCD to watch during the day but, at night with a push of a button the screen comes down over it and the projector starts. Trust me there is nothing like front projection. Go 100" or bigger. I agree with the "if I did it again I'd go 120"." It's so good my LCD hasn't been turned on for 3 weeks now. |

Well I ran a projector for about 3 years and it was great but as others have mentioned you do have to change the bulbs every so often - for me it was every year and a half - movies, ps2 ps3 and tv eat up those 3000 hours of lamp life pretty quick and then of course you need total darkness for optimum viewing. I made the switch July of 2007 and purchased my Samsung 61" LED DLP and I love it - when I'm off work this thing is on 24 hrs a day and it's as clear as it was on day 1 ---Love my LED

I don't think you could go wrong either way. I purchased a 73" mitsubishi RPTV about 3 months ago. I wanted a front projector for the "theater experience", but I get too much light in my living room during the day. I think it was a good compromise.
