Default HD DVD Clearly Leading in Next-Gen DVD Sales

Quote:
Saturday, March 31, 2007

By Mark Hachman

"Within three years it will just be HD DVD." – Tadashi Okamura, the Toshiba chairman, at the APRILone trade show.

According to the latest sales numbers from Nielsen VideoScan, the HD DVD format appears to be gaining momentum.

It's now March, and HD DVD appears to be holding its edge -- proving either that the assumption was incorrect, or that HD DVD's apparent momentum didn't need the crutch. Moreover, the total of HD DVD discs sold now outweighs the number of Blu-Ray discs sold, giving both the short-term and long-term edge to Toshiba's format.

Very nice and Great news for HD-DVD ,,,what makes me surprise now is Superman Returns has surpassed HD-DVD version ,if you can read this AMIR you will be surprise too i think so and i recommend you to surrender yourself Before HD-DVD fans invade you

Now we have Departed and Superman Returns surpasses HD-DVD version ,Hey warner hopefully you reconsider your decision lately to release Matrix on both formats even it is not applicable dont worry i'll be waiting for BD and ONLY BLU-RAY DISCS to watch Matrix.Warner keep on doing this good Job i congratulate you.You have made the right decision.

I say blu-ray should win. From what I hear, it can hold more date, but cost more to produce. As long as the extra costs doesn't get pass along to consumer then why not get the better format(blu-ray)? From what I've seen by shopping for blu-ray movies, the HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs costs the same.

I sold my PS3 this morning after I read this (*saw the writing on the wall) and I spent all Sunday trying to get a HD-XA2 player but they are all sellng like hotcakes so everywhere I go they're sold out already. Someone offered me one for $1080 and 7 HD DVD discs and I almost took it but the cash I got for the PS3 just covered half of that so I couldn't afford it. Why did I buy such a cheap product!

Yeah, me too! I sold all my Blu-ray movies and bought a HD-XA2, HD DVD add-on and a bunch of HD DVD titles, because of it's superior stats. ROFL! Sorry, I couldn't keep a straight face!

Well now that the day is kinda over, well reading the real article (the one that says BDs rule) and using a sales figure that's been circulatiing for one of the titles in the article, I did this leetel table:

RatingIndex% Title Sales:

469 Casino Royale 100k
100 Batman 21k
99 Departed blu 21k
89 Superman Returns blu 19k
85 Superman Returns red 18k
64 Underworld Evo 14k
61 Departed red 13k
52 Mission Impossible III red 11k
50 Mission Impossible III blu 11k

numbers rounded to nearest k for simplicity

Maybe that explains why Warner didn't put LPCM on Happy Feet, they tried to get more of a Superman Returns HD DVD sales ratio... instead of it being a possible HD DVD masacre ratio like the Departed , which wouldn't have looked good..
