Default Charlie And Chocolate Factory(Johnny Depp Remake) 03/17/09

It looks like Warner will be releasing in Bluray one of the few catalog titles available in HDDVD only. From what I understand from this page, Warner is releasing the movie in the U.S. on march 17th. Heres a link:

http://www.planetahd.com/

Usually this site has been accurate in releases dates.

I wonder what they're going to do about the audio situation. The HD DVD had the main audio track in DD+ 640 kbps, but the isolated musical score was TrueHD

I hated the Burton/Depp remake. It was one of the only movies I've ever seen in theaters that I almost walked out on. The only thing that kept me there was that a large group of us saw it and I didn't have a ride home.

Gene Wilder was right in saying this movie never had to be done.

The remake does look great in high def, though (I have the HD DVD), since the picture is so colorful. The HD DVD release of Willy Wonka was a little lackluster.

March is shaping up to be Tim Burton month with this and the Batman titles coming out.

Actually I liked a lot, not as much as the original, but I liked it a lot. My HDDVD has excellent sound and the colors looks beautiful. I hope Warners makes a product at least in the same quality as the HDDVD, since this is one of the few HDDVD I still have waiting to be replaced in Blu.

As long as the film gets a lossless audio track I will buy it ... but I wish they'd release Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory out the same day.. that'd be cool.

all right! woohoo! I liked this film alot. Never cared for the original, the Dahl estate never liked it either, despite it's popularity.

I like Burton's films. But his remakes are generally terrible.

yes, Planet of the Apes was dog caca, but Charlie was alot more faithful to the book than the 70's film.

Dahl objected to it being toocute a musical (orange dwarves took a little getting used to for book fans even then), the script had basically been taken away from him for rewrites without his consent, and both he and the Estate had issues with Wilder
[Show spoiler]pretending to be
mean to Charlie in the finale--
Boo freakin' hoo, Roald...FTR, Wilder nailed the character in ways the book couldn't even imagine, and Roald's own scripting makes it the best Dahl transcription onscreen this side of "Chitty/Bang".

As for how Tim Burton ended up frat-goofing all over the project...that's an even longer story:
It was going to be the Straight Book-Faithful Version that Roald wanted, with Gary "Seabiscuit" Ross directing Nicholas Cage, until....the rumor-fanboys took over.
(In fact, Burton's name had never been mentioned until we got that goofy "Marilyn Manson cast in Burton's Wonka!" thing all over Fox News, who was dopey enough to believe it.)

I believe the original is one of those titles that would need to be remastered due to the 1080i (bobbed) error.

I hope Warner gives me a reason to upgrade from the HD DVD.

I'd agree... the whole "Lets mine the past for movie-goer gold" mentality is terrible. I'm sorry, the whole story was almost identical to the original, the only changes were to turn Wonka himself into a weirdo (truer to the book or not, it was less interesting in my book). The use of frikken Deep Roy in the technological feat of being every oompa loompa was boring to me. He just looked like a thousand little Pakistani guys (or Indian, whatever) the originall orangies at looked like a different 'species'.

I wish Tim Burton would stop remaking crap and get back to making original films that are creative and interesting...

Wasn't even remotely true to the book:
In the book, Wonka is Dahl's own whimsically-personified payback fantasy against Beastly Misbehaved Children, and master of his silly domain--

Hardly the timid "Sorta like Michael Jackson, kinda?" of Depp and Burton's underimagination, and more of a gleefully untactful gives-as-good-as-he-gets top-hatted Pan, who can dispense childlike innocence to Charlie, and nasty deadpans to Veruca and Mike--
Wilder's "Uh, you should open your mouth a little wider next time..." is straight out of the book.

Willy Wonka looks like a murdering child rapist. He creeps me out.
