Sony to continue selling 20GB PS3 in Japan

Despite decision made by SCEA
Sony has confirmed that the 20GB PlayStation 3 will remain available in Japan, despite SCEA's decision to stop selling the machine in North America.
News of the move emerged earlier this week, with SCEA's David Karraker stating that the company will focus on the 60GB model due to "overwhelming demand" for the larger hard drive-enabled console.
However, speaking to Famitsu (as translated by IGN), a Sony Computer Entertainment representative said, "We're currently not considering changes akin to North America.
"However," the spokesperson added, "We would like to react flexibly with the market."
At present, the 60GB PS3 is the only model available in Europe, and SCEE has yet to confirm whether the 20GB version will launch here. Earlier this week, when asked whether SCEA's move could affect the decision, a spokesperson said, "We'll continue to monitor demand for the 20GB model, from a consumer and retailer perspective, which will be factored into any future European launch plans."

The cost of FedEx/UPS-ing a 20GB PS3 would make it the same as a 60GB. Pointless to import but relevant to the people in Japan.

They should set up a plant to manufacture north american bound PS3 in a low-cost area in the U.S.

20Gig drives are already dinosaurs. Probably costs less to ramp up production of a bigger drive than keep the old parts around used for the 20GB version.

How long before Sony discontinues the 60Gig version in favor of a bigger drive? I say three years tops. By then, the 20GB versions will be in a museum. Not really, but you know what I mean.

I always figured the 20gb model would disappear ever since I found out some games forced you to install them on the hdd. 20gb wouldn't cut it for that, and honestly 60gbs won't do the job either when the PS3's library gets larger. Thankfully the hdd isn't proprietary, so I could just go to compusa and buy a bigger one right now if I wanted to.
