Default Shogun Assassin - August 24, 2010

Am I the only one who would like to have this on Blu-Ray?

And if AnimEigo is going to turn its back on anime to become the Shogun Assassin Studio, they might as well follow BCI Eclipse and Blue Underground, and start jumping into the shallow end on Blu-upgrading their main franchise-iconic cult sellers.

(Who knows, we Urusei Yatsura fans might benefit from it, when they think they need a second franchise to upgrade... )

The whole Lone Wolf & Cub series on blu-ray. That would rock.

The Baby Cart movies are the original Japanese. Shogun Assassin is parts of the first two Baby Cart movies edited together for international release. Ive only seen the re-package so I can't comment on the originals. Shogun Assassin works fine on it's own as a movie.

And AnimEigo finally released the "definitive" version, where the visuals were taken from the pristine original Japanese Lone Wolf prints...

(And, of course, there's always Tom Hanks in "Road to Perdition", for the American version of the story. )

To be honest I would rather have the 6 films over Shogun Assassin.

That's not being fair to AnimEigo. They're working on Yawara right now. The problem is that they simply don't have the financial base to buy the licenses to current titles to compete with the corporate money. So they're going after stuff with an audience that they can, while trying to serve the underserved classic fan market

AnimEigo will be dipping their toes into Blu this year, what form that takes is still undecided

Was it even released on DVD? And if so was it just encoded from some kids VHS? This would be a good one on Blu-Ray, I even like the dubbing on this one.

Yes, it's out on DVD. But why would people want an edited together movie of the two first Lone Wolf & Cub movies when all 6 kick a**!!!!!??!!

Which is why they're delivering on a suggestion they post back in 1997, lest people accuse them of either being not interested in or unable to license any more anime series away from Funi, Bandai, or what was then ADV, or that nearly every single other one of their shows apart from Urusei Yatsura has since lapsed licenses or been snapped up by other studios.

Meanwhile, their series of live-action samurai/yakuza seems to have been uninterrupted.

Agree... I would pass on Shogun Assassin if it came out. Why do I want a piece of a great series?

I can't imagine what it would look like in high def considering the old film and sound. But Blu is Blu

The money a lot of those shows are generating does not make it worth it to pay for a new license in many cases. Asking prices have also skyrocketed, or companies (like Toei) decided to recall everything (we all know how that turned out). Macross was always a short term deal as well.

These unfortunately are the realities of the buis. Big money came in and snatched up stuff that AnimEigo should have done in the first place like BGC2040.

Seriously, they're a very small company in the big scheme of things. They finally made Yawara work, and good for them. Who knows what old show that still has to be done will be next? Myself, I'd love to see the original Yamato done, since as far as my research goes, the unaltered original remains unlicensed. In the meantime, the Samurai movies are paying the bills

I just picked up the Eureka box set of the Lone Wolf series, but I would certainly upgrade to blu if all the films were released.

Not sure if I want the blu of just Shogun Assassin.
