Default PS3 blu-ray player vs Blu-ray players

Ok first of all, I'm planning on buying blu-ray player. Last night I was just researching on stuff about blu-ray players and I found out that PS3 blu-ray player is the best player out there. If this is true then it does not make any sense. PS3 costs $399 and some blu ray costs more than $399. Then what's the point of buying "just" blu-ray players if PS3 costs less and performs better? If I was a gamer then I'd obviously buy a PS3, but I'm not a gamer. I dont want to play games. I hate games. So what the heck?? Well my point is that whats the point of buying players that costs like 500 bucks if PS3 costs less and performs better?

The PS3 being better than all other players was true a year ago, but not now. It used to be that you couldn't get a standalone player for less than the PS3, which is no longer the case. If you are in no way a gamer then the only way the PS3 is better is because it has wireless internet for firmware updates and it loads a bit faster.
If the wireless internet for updates isn't enough to sway you I'd recommend either the Sony S350 or the Panasonic BD35. These are both cheaper than the PS3 and are quieter, have a display, and use IR for the remote rather than bluetooth, so if you have a universal remote it would work with these players.

you could use the ps3 to do a lot of other things too like show pictures and use the HD to store videos/music as well

When I was shopping for a Blu-ray player last year and comparing the PS3 to a S300, I was led to believe that the stand-alone player had a slightly better picture quality over the PS3. But without side-by-side comparison of the same exact Blu-ray movie on two identical HDTVs, there is no real way to trust such a comparison.

PS3 vs. the NEW BDP-S350

The next and probably the biggest reason not to go with a PS3 if your primary need is to play movies is that you won’t have a standard DVD remote or the ability to use a universal remote without an additional purchase.

um...they do have a standard dvd remote.

I have both a PS3 and an S350.

PS3 hands down. But the 350 is also very nice for just playing movies if that's all youre interested in doing.

I have both as well, love my S350 but the PS3 is faster and smoother and plays any disc, but is also hotter and noiser(60gb)

Main reason I went with a stand alone is so I could bitstream to my receiver.

Heat is a big reason to go with the standalone over the PS3.
Our equipment cabinet runs 10 deg. hotter (even with our cabinet cooling fan) than with the S550.
Also, the PS3 is an energy hog.
Add the lack of the new audio codecs and the need for another remote, and the standalone becomes the clear choice for movie watching.

I have a PS3 and a Panny BD35.
For me, its the Panny that wins it. I like the fact that it works with my Harmoy One, it's got a display on the front, it bitstreams to my Onkyo, it's a lot more quite and it fits well with my other components in my entertainment center.
The PS3 is still in my EC, but now its just for gaming. I hated the fan noise. I can't tell you how many times that I've come home at night and heard that the PS3 was on when I walked in the door. The one plus for the PS3 though, is that I can put the Harmony charging dock on the same shelf next to it.

At one time maybe, but now there are soo many BD players - at different price points, and capabilities. If you are goinig for just movies - I recommend several standalones to include the LG-BH200, LG 300, Panasonic BD35/55, or the new Oppo BD player. All of these players test in the video section better than the PS3, have more audio options (for people with receivers without HDMI) and the LG-300 is actually faster than the PS3. Price wise - the Maganavox, Memorex, Insignias ect are less expensive than the PS3. The only real reason to go with a PS3 now is if you like gaming. If you plan on gaming - the PS3 is the way to go, but if its just for BD playback - that $399.00 price point can be beat by $100.00 or more!

If you're going to watch SD DVD you definately need to go with a Panny - they have excellent upconversion - tested better than the PS3 by Sound and Vision Magazine.

is there a reason nobody has mentioned the newer 550 sony bdp?

Saw it at best buy the other day and had considered picking it up to use instead of my ps3.

Got a PS3 and a Sony BD-S500 and i can not see the differance in picture quality. PS3 has the advantage though that it can decode DTS-HD Master where as the BD-S500 do not support it and the PS3 is profile 2 where the BD-S500 is profile 1.

The S500 is an old player, the S550 has onboard TrueHD and DTS-HD Master decoding - as well as analog 7.1 outs if you have an older receiver without HDMI (you will get TrueHD and DTS-HD Master through the 7.1 analogs) no need to upgrade the receiver (this is something the PS3 doesn't have) and it's also 2.0 compliant - pretty fast and once again - upconverts better than its PS3 brethern. If the OP does have a HDMI receiver that can decode - he can bitstream the Lossless codecs if the OP so desires (PS3 can't do this either). Most of all - you can find it for about $299.00. Since the OP is not interested in gaming - and upconversion seems to be a priority, I would definately steer him towards a good standalone.

P.S. The S550 also comes with a 1gb usb flash drive in the box

I always thought the PS3 was the better deal just for the simply fact that there is so much more the Ps3 can do.
I just bought a keyboard for it and i love going on the net with it.Love the games and guess what a very good blu-ray with easy firmware up dates.

My mother in law just asked me if i could recommended her a blu-player.I recommended the Ps3 just for the simply fact i think it won't give her Problems and she loves the idea that she has a gaming system and excess to the net
