Hi all, my name scott and im a newbie to this site, im a big blu-ray fan and im just starting up my collection.

My main question is now that blu-ray titles are coming out more frequently are you replacing your dvd's and if you are what are you doing with your dvd's? e.g. seliing them on or keeping them

It seems I am rebuying titles on Bu-ray. But, I'm keeping my standard DVDs...for now. I'm a bit of a pack rat, though. Plus, you can't get much for selling DVDs in the US anyway.

I've sold most of mine off in Job Lot's on ebay, I want to start fresh.. I have kept some Universal titles.. and other gem's that I dont think we will see in HD.

I recently bought Total Recall on Blu-Ray and was not at all impressed with the quality. I am not sure if this is a correct statement, but I don't think you can get good HD quality out of source material not shot in HD and/or old source material. Sure they can upsample, but unless they do a major overhaul, quality will still be lacking.

So with that said, I am really not replacing any of my older DVDs. My Total Recall DVD looked almost as good on my upsampling DVD player than the blu-ray did.

I have however stopped buying DVDs. Everything I buy now, I buy on BD.

Post My replacement plan . . .

Here's what I'm doing:

  • Universal Titles: hold on to these until Universal goes blu
  • New Titles: if it's one that I like, I buy it to support the format and build my library
  • Existing Titles (in my DVD collection): IF it has a good transfer, and is rewatchable, and is reasonably priced I will buy it

After buying a replacement title (or one that I know will be replaced like Spiderman, etc) I've been listing these on eBay in lots of 10-15 titles. I've also sold some individually in yard sales.

My holdout collector items are titles that will take a long time to come the BD like the Star Wars trilogies, LOTR. One thing you will learn -- if you hold onto your DVDs too long, they will be worth less and less as time goes on.

I did this with my D-VHS/D-Theater collection right when they went out of print, but before Blu-ray came to market. This allowed me to recoup ALL of my investment in D-VHS.

On some titles I even made a handsome profit. For example, the ALIEN (DTS/Director's Cut) D-Theater version which I paid ~$25 for, I sold on eBay for ~$110.

I've sold most of my DVD collection, I'm buying Blu-ray only except for anime & foreign movies since it'll be some time before they come out on Blu-ray.
