Default Recommendations for a new receiver

Hello, I just upgraded to a samsung 850 46" tv and a Sony 550 blu-ray player. I would like to upgrade my receiver (currently a very basic $200 Yamaha) to take better advantage of the sound offered from blu-ray discs. I'm budgeting between $500-700 for the receiver. Is that enough for a "good enough" receiver or should I save for something better? What kind should I get?

Check out the "Receivers" forum, and your budget will be just fine.

My vote is the Yamaha 663, but there are many good options.

I have a Sony receiver and it has the theater sync. So if you have matching equipment you can cut down on remotes or have one touch features, which I think is cool. Something to think about.

Good call on the Sammy 850. I recommend the Sony 920. The more HDMI hookups the merry. I current have an Onkyo receiver and looking to upgrade too.

+1 for the 920. This is an awesome receiver. I used it to replace an Onkyo.

Thank you for the recommendation. Next question from someone who is trying to have a decent system while knowing very little about Audio/Visual - when I bought the current HTiB, I bought 14 gauge speaker wire and simply ran it from the receiver to each of the 5 speakers. The speakers themselves are nothing fancy - came with the receiver. Is this new receiver going to give me HD sound even with basic speakers, or will I need to upgrade those too?

I Would Use That Reciever And Upgrade Your Speakers First, something I Have Learned . right Now 6th Ave Has Paradigm Titan Monitors For 348.00 A Pair.NEXT GET A GOOD SUB ,THEN UPGRADE TO THE RECIEVER if not this is a good reciever that iam looking pioneer VSX-1018AH.either way speakers will make a big difrence.Rember a good 2.1 system will always beat a mediocre 5.1

Just my opinion but save up an extra 300.00 and buy yourself a Marantz 6003.
It will give you better overall sound quality than any Yamaha or Onkyo in that price range ever will.
