Just to recap my previous posts, I decided to upgrade my htpc to play blu ray content.
It's running an old pentium M chip--- which is well-within the blu ray specs, but my video card was lacking (an old nvidida 7850 gtx). Blue ray playback was choppy and unacceptable. At the advice of one our members, I purchased an ati 3850. I'm very happy with it-- it was cheap, and completly solved my problem-- blu ray plaback is awesome. BUt--- that fawking card is LOUD--- the fan thrhottles to 100% all the time.. using rivatuner doesn't help. I'm still within the time frame to return it. Any suggestions on a card that will handle blue ray, but is quiet (I have an nvidia 8600gts from BFG, and its pretty loud as well)? OR am I just asking for too much? |

that is *nice*....
I have an old 8600GT that I just overclocked--- with a mild overclock it went from jerky blu ray playback to perfectly smooth... I'm going to try that for a bit. but thanks for the linky--- If this doesn't work thats what I'm getting! |

Just to add some more information to this...
Gigabyte make some really nice Graphic Cards with Silent Pipe heatsinks (fanless). The highest Nvidia available is the 9600GT and in ATI it's the HD 4850. Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT (GV-NX96T1GHP): http://www.giga-byte.com/Products/VG...e=GV-NX96T1GHP ATI Radeon HD4850 (GV-R485MC-1GH): http://www.giga-byte.com/Products/VG...=GV-R485MC-1GH I am not sure if you are looking for something with a budget in mind or something powerful but quiet. In Australia the 9600GT sells for about $200 and the HD 4850 for about $300. I currently have a HTPC running that 9600GT and it plays modern games very well (Crysis, Bioshock etc.). For me, I was after the most powerful that was also quiet. Which is why I went with the 9600GT. However, now the HD 4850 has been released with a Silent Pipe I am considering an upgrade. ![]() If you are after something a little less expensive, then the HD 4670 that prerich linked to looks good. |

thanks-- this is purely a bluray/dvd/tv machine... I have no plans to play games on it (not currently, anyway). The 8600gt I have in it is doing the job very well--- I can run the fan at about 30% using rivatuner, and it's barely audible. I have noticed some very, very minor hiccups though..
On the other hand, the ATI 3850 I had is AWESOME. It's from powercolor.. but the fan not adjustable. The noise is just unacceptable. Does anyone make a 8600GTS with just heat pipes? I have an 880GTS in my gaming rig that uses just heat pipes (I'd swap it out into my htpc, but I've read that the 8600 actually handles hd content better, and the processor on my htpc is pretty weak). Alternatively, does anyone make a silent ati 3850? |

You don't want to go with the one which prerich suggested or some other newer card? Newegg has about 60 HDCP passive cooling video cards like HD4350, HD4670, HD4650 etc.... I was using the HD4670 1GB last year and that was a great card for BD playback. |

how does the 9600 compare with the 8600?
again, just for BD playback... is it any better, or is it the same as the 8600? (I know the 9800 vs. 8800 was basically a dissapointment..) |
