None of the first generation BLU-RAY standalone players on the market currently have the min hardware for PIP. PIP is a mandated feature in all BLU-RAY players manufactured starting October 31st 2007. Some people claim no BLU-RAY player on the market and not even the PS3 according to video business magazine will be able to do PIP. Then when one reads another source they here that the only BLU-RAY device that can handle PIP when it becomes available in the future is the PS3 machine.
So technically the PS3 machine should be able in the future handle PIP with a firmware upgrade. We will have to wait and see to make sure but it meets all the minimum memory and storage requirements for both PIP and profile 2.0 BD-live. According to a video business magazine article the upcoming Sony BDP-S300 will not have the min memory requirements for PIP. Sony might surprise everyone with the BDP-S300. It has already been delayed until late July and I think Sony might have at the last minute added the min 256MB of memory to the player so that it well handle PIP. If the Sony BDP-S300 does not have PIP then it will be discontinued and no longer made after October 31st. This Sony player most likely has PIP since it would not be logically to stop making a BLU-RAY player after 3 months. It is not economical to do so. Most likely all second generation BLU-RAY players will have a min of 256MB of memory so that they will work with PIP. So possible the Samsung BD-1200 and the Pioneer BDP-94HD are PIP compatible. If they are not they will be discontinued in October.
Until the magic October 31st date comes it would be ideal for magazine reviewers to mention which players have the minimum memory requirements for PIP (Profile 1.1) and which players with Internet connections have the mandatory 1GB storage for BD-live (after OCT 31 players with internet connection are mandated to have 1GB storage also for BD-live). Most likely all second generation BLU-RAY players including the Samsung BD-1200, Pioneer BDP-94HD, and Sony BDP-S300 will handle PIP. Again I did not say they did but most likely they will handle PIP. I can not see Samsung, Pioneer, and Sony all coming out with new players and then having them discontinued from production in October. That would be so stupid economically to have such a short life span. Especially for the Sony model which is released in late July. All they need to do is add 256MB of memory in the player to make it PIP profile 1.1, then when profile 1.1 is finished a firmware update would make the player full PIP capable.

P.S.

PIP is a minor feature for most people. Some people like having a little picture of the director talking while listening to a commentary. For most people excellent picture and sound quality with a wide selection of movies is more important. Time goes by fast and October 31st 2007 will be hear sooner then most people think. When that date arrives PIP will be standard in all BLU-RAY players and we then can put this issue behind.

Thanks for the info. I am almost sure every second generation BLU-RAY player will do PIP. The PS3 should be able to do PIP and BD-live.
