Letterbox black bars onHDTV - Blu-ray Forum

I have a new Toshiba 40" LCD HDTV 1080p & a Sony Blue-Ray S350. Everything seems to be working fine. Questions is when playing DVD & Blue-Ray discs I still am getting black bars above and below the picture.

What gives?

Many movies are wider at about 2.35 to 1 ratio. A few are even wider. Black bars are normal for these size movies. On the 1.85 you won't see them.

Follow that?

Indian Hills Theater Active Member Member since:Dec 2008 Location:Metro Omaha Home Theater Gallery:6 4K collection:- Blu-ray collection:-	Your TV is 16 x 9 (or about 1.85 wide to the height) Many movies are wider at about 2.35 to 1 ratio. A few are even wider. Black bars are normal for these size movies. On the 1.85 you won't see them. Follow that?
