Default Can a scratched/dirty disc damage my player?

I have no idea how a blu-ray player works, so I'm sorry if this is a dumb question... I rented a blu-ray from blockbuster and it looks in pretty rough shape. It has scratches and even looks like something (soda) may have splattered on it. I plan on returning it, but if I hadn't noticed this and played it, could I have damaged my player?

Only if the layer of soda is really cruddy and thick or the scratches created debris. BD optical pickup, just like CD and DVD, uses laser to read the data. Even though the pickup needs to be closer to the disc than CDs and DVDs, it is still not touching the disc.

If you want to try out this Blockbuster disc, clean it up first with a microfiber cloth and water.
