Default Upscaling?

call me weird but i updated the ps3 to 1.80 this morning and thought i would check it out. first i put GT4 and i was amazed i can see the difference. then i put in the fast and the furious and kept switching from 480p to 1080p and i cant see the diiference. my question is is there a difference in picture quality between upscaling and blu ray?

Did you turn the upscaling on? You have to go in the DVD menus of the PS3 and enable it. Try "Full." Try different settings.

Yes, there is a huge difference between upscaling and BR. The difference is in the resolution. Before today, my TV was forced to upscale PS3-sent standard DVD video. It looked edgy, and rough... like it wasn't anti-aliased and had some semi-transparent lines through it every few millimeters or so. What upscaling does is clean this all up so you don't see the rough edges, basically. But you still have the same definition of the source material.

I downloaded the 1.8 update yesterday and I did not see the difference in dvds nor in ps2 game(s). Smackdown vs Raw 2007 looked the same when upscaling was turned on or off. Same with dvds. My game and some Dvds that I tried looked cloudy/gloomy and old.

And then again I can't see much difference between blu-rays and dvds yet either and I have a 1080P HDTV. Also, my ps3 is connected via an HDMI cable.

I've got a 56" 1080p Samsung DLP, and there was a huge improvement in both dvd video quality, and I put in God of War 2, and game upscaling is just as spectacular - clears up a lot of the pixelated edges.
