Can somebody please explain "mega DRC" as indicated for contrast ratio. Every site I go to refers to this and not the familiar 50000 to 1000000:1 ratio.

I would love to tell you what it means, but it means absolutely nothing. Contrast ratio is only relevant if listed as the native contrast ratio. No LCD's really exceed 5k:1, so when you see these dynamics that list in the 10's and 100's of thousands or millions it is not an accurate ratio. This is something that I loathe about Samsung because they don't list the native ratio. Sharp usually does, and their best never was over 3k:1, same with Sony. The new LED backlights will increase contrast ratio, but not to the level of the millions, plasmas cant even do that, even pioneer elite kuro's.

Sony lists 3k:1 for their xbr6 and xbr7 (both non-LED), but don't list it for the xbr8 (LED). They do this because it is not actually that significant of an increase, but don't want to admit it to the consumers. Consumers can see the darker black level, but it doesnt necessarily mean the contrast ratio is better.

ok, but comparing apples to apples... for example the 650 series has a dynamic ratio listed as 50000:1. Ok, fine - not the native ratio. And I agree these "dynamic" ratios look good to the consumer and is probably a marketing ploy, but for the new Luxia ultra slim models, they do not have any ratio indicated other than "mega DRC". I'm just wondering what this means and what kind of dynamic ratio they boast with their new line. Wondering if it will be close to the level of black for the A950, which is significantly more than the 650 series. I know the Luxia are new TVs, but are in the stores now and no contrast. Am think of returning my 650 (not satisfied with the black level and have a lot of backlight bleeding)

From what I've herd the A950 has better black levels since the panel uses LED local dimming technology. The 6000/7000/8000 use edge led lighting. They could list 10000000:1 Dynamic that means nothing. "Mega Dynamic contrast" is another way to exaggerate what the display is truly capable of.

Get the 950. The new ones have flashlights and clouds. Here is a pic of a 3700 tv. Look at the bottom right.

Even with this being LED Backlit??? I don't know why they just don't refine upon technology that provides the best picture - like the A950. I guess they want to "wow" consumers with these new slim TVs and take a step backwards using edge-lit LED instead of supporting the technology used in the A950 (using localized dimming, etc). Can't find an A950 55" anywhere locally. Most of the stores have disontinued them. (this is the same flashlighting I have with my A650 - I hate it).

the b6000 is 1,000,000:1 dynamic EDGE-LIT LED LCD. Basically it's a crazy thin, eco friendly, b650 with less inputs and no media 2.0. I'd personally save the $600 and get a 650 over this tv or save up and get a true LED LCD like the a950 and XBR8 of last year with local dimming. I compared the B650 and B6000 side by side for about 3 hours tonight at work because we were crazy slow and I could not tell one difference in PQ from factory defaults. Also to note, i don't think monoprice HDMI's will work on the b6000 because the inputs are facing the sides of the tv and i remember reading something that said that an HDMI cable thicker than 14mm (.55") won't work.

Also, expect there will be a local dimming set from both sony and samsung but it won't be announced until this summer i'm sure.

flashlighting really blows... That's not cool that they didn't use the local dimming LEDs like the 950. Sad... That could of really moved LCD's up a notch all across the board for consumers.

I agree, when I saw a claibrated 950, I was in complete awe of it. the new thins ones are nice, but don't have the depth of the 950. I am an LCD person personally, and really wanted to get a 46" 950, hopefully they will bring something like a 9000 out with local dimming.... I don't care if its 3"s thick or 1.2"s. thin is thin and I am not hanging it on a wall, so let us have the best possible.

Saw a thread on AVS someone posted some pictures and a review of the UN55B7100 series LED backlit lcd and compared it to last years panasonic PZ800U and the new G10. The black levels are said to be the best and very close to the plasmas/ reviewer said better then the 800u*. Huge leap for lcd, the model reviewed did not suffer from flashlighting or clouding all 3 sets were professionally calibrated. Personally i think they are still priced too high. But they are truly some of the best lcds out right now and still priced lower then the XBR8 for example.

I saw a 7100 series at BB the other day and it was very, very good looking and that was just hanging on their wall, I just haven't seen anything the likes of the 950, aside from a pioneer.

If you have oodles of cash and want nothing to do with plasma then look at THIS 52" Sharp for a cool $12,000. Its an awesome LED LCD with local dimming. Want a similar TV at a fraction of the cost? Then look at THIS 47" LG. Its $2000 shipped on Amazon. Check THIS thread over on avsforum. There is a review and a lot of good pictures showing what this set is all about from a user over in Korea where this set has been available since last year. Blacks are serious on this set!
