Default Toshiba Creating In-Car HD DVD Player

Hopefully BLU-RAY camp will also create a in car player. Of course the responsible thing to do is to watch the movie in the back seat, the driver should never be watching the movie.

I'm sorry but I don't see the demand for it...just goes to show you that the HD-DVD camp just likes throwing money to the wind.

I wonder what display technology they will use - full res LCDs are around 23 inches diagonal... that is big for any car.

No, kids aren't going to notice the difference. *No one* is going to notice the difference on those small in-car screens. HD in car is not a demand. But dvd in car is. And you can't play an hd dvd or blu-ray in a dvd player. If you want to play the movie in the car currently, you have to buy two copies of the movie if it's not one released on a combo disc. Same with any portable dvd player.

It's an extra plus for the hd dvd side, no question about it. It's something Sony & the BDA need to be doing too.

they might want to try dominating the in-house department before they start venturing off in the portable/car hookup realm...

they are in over their heads here....

They can blame all the random non software related movies freezing up on road bumps now.....good thinking

Hmmmm. how are owners supposed to unplug the player when it has those pesky total player lockup espisodes?

Can't disagree with any of this, although it's like you suddenly shift gears and immediately contradict yourself:

Yes, there is a very serious question and doubt about it.

No, they don't need to waste a bunch of money and resources.

This is the kind of thing you do well after any format wars are done and everything has settled out, not during one.

Will this come with the fancy side burner option for boiling the discs?

I have a Pioneer LCD DVD 5.1 Flip-out, in the dash of my truck and use it ALL the time. I know its illegal to watch and drive but I'm good at it, I don't get distracted too easily. Anyways, the only advantage I see to this is that- Say you buy a HD DVD or Blu-Ray movie to watch at home and then months go by and you make a vacation and a long drive ahead of you and you want that movie, Guess what? You don't need to buy it on DVD because you've already got the movie in hand AND your car plays it! You will have no need to buy a 2nd copy on the DVD format in order to watch it.

(And yes, I know the player we're talking about does not play Blu-Ray)

Just use the managed copy portion of AACS to create a smaller copy to a SD memory card and have a digital player. You will never get anything out of higher than 480p on a sub 17" LCD.

Voila... and no chances of read errors from bumps.
