Cataloguing Vinyl LP's!

I have to get around to cataloguing my vinyl again. I moved into my new apartment about 9 months ago and haven't got around to organizing my collection just yet. Seeing as I'm without a turntable for now, I may as well put in the effort and get it done.

I saw an LP Divider set at Sunrise Records, but they want $80CDN for it, which I think is a little steep. Can anyone point me to a less expensive alternative? I've seen the Suck UK divider set at amazon, but I don't particularly care for it despite the fact it's only around $30USD.

I'd also be interested to know how you categorize your vinyl. Is it purely in alpha order by artist? Or do you have your own method? I have always just alphabetized my collection by artist, with 2 exceptions. Boxsets stay together and I put all Classical together. With classical I could never determine if I should do it by Composer or Performer.

Any thoughts and/or opinions?

Dunno anything about LPs, but I sort CDs by artist (band name or last name), and then chronologically. Various Artist compilations and soundtracks are sorted separately by title. Box sets are separate from that.

Maybe I should have included CD in my thread title as I'm sure it could be applied similarly. I also store chronologically by artist, although that portion of it does tend to get out of sequence at times.

Hi John,

I keep each medium separate. But, whenever possible, I try to alphabetize the collections by artist name in chronological order of release. There are times that I may alter this for instance when certain members of a group release LPs or CDs; in those instances, I may keep them with but right before the group's LPs. Also, for special recordings, at least for the present I have been keeping them in a separate section of the library but cataloged as mentioned.

Hi Rich,

I should have mentioned that I also keep my special recordings (i.e 180-grams, etc.) separate and apart as well. I don't have that many currently (maybe around 30 or so), but it's steadily growing as my new purchases tend to focus in on the higher-grade pressings.

I sort mine alphabetcially by artist and then by title. I do have different sections for different genres: rock/pop/jazz, classical, boxed sets, soundtracks, and singles. I tend to sort the classical stuff by composer.
