Default Wolverine film's ending will vary based on where you see it...

Quote:
Fox has come up with a new way to combat the pirating of Wolverine: They’re turning it into Clue. Director Gavin Hood recently announced at a screening attended by First Showing that they’ve hidden multiple endings to the movie on different prints. So where you see it, may drastically alter exactly how the movie ends.

Does anyone feel "cheated" that what they're paying for might not be the "complete" movie? I'm guessing the endings won't be that much different from each other though, and I'm sure each and every one of them will eventually make their way over to Youtube anyways.

I just stepped out of a screening of X-Men Origins: Wolverine on the Fox lot in Los Angeles and before it started, director Gavin Hood stopped by to introduce the film. He spent most of the time thanking us for coming to this screening and seeing Wolverine the way it should be seen, in theaters, and talked about how many difference there were between the final cut and the early leaked version. He then mentioned that Marvel has a tradition of hiding easter eggs in their films, and it's no exception for Wolverine. They've hidden multiple secret endings on different prints and theaters will be showing different versions.

Fox is a bit desperate to try and get people in theaters on May 1st for the opening and this definitely seems like a very unique decision to try and bring people in. While we've seen plenty of easter egg endings, like in Iron Man last year, we haven't seen multiple endings like this in a long time. Hood didn't say how many different endings there would be. As for the other differences between the leaked version and the final cut, Hood explained that there were 400 unfinished visual effects shots and that there was no score, unfinished sound mixing, and unfinished coloring. However, he didn't mention anything about differences in footage.

I will say, quickly, that I enjoyed Wolverine and wouldn't call it great, but liked it a lot more than I was expecting. I think my expectations had been brought down considerably because of all the negative buzz from the leak. However, seeing a finished and polished version was what made all the difference (I never saw the leaked version anyway). As for the secret ending we saw tonight,
[Show spoiler]I'll only say that it featured Deadpool, and the only other thing I'll mention, is that he may still be around.
We'll let you know when we hear any more about the secret endings in Wolverine, including how many there are and what they are.

edit: gotya. i think it still makes sense to have a separate thread so the topic doesn't get lost in another (since it's a pretty big thing for a movie to do this) but a mod can either replace my OP with your post or just lock this i guess

got it. i thought they just meant clue had different endings compiled together, not that different ones were shown based on different locations (which is why i was confused as to the comparison ). that's crazy though.

Clue did FULL endings. These are just different post-credit teasers, I'm sure. I find it hard to believe the final minutes of the third act have any wiggle room at all.

And frankly, I'd be surprised if any of them were all that interesting.
[Show spoiler]One hinting a Wolverine sequel with him in Japan, one hinting Deadpool alive for a Deadpool spin-off, possibly one hinting at a First Class spin-off featuring a young Cyclops prominently.
But they'll be short and not have anything substantive. Not even a great character cameo like Iron Man managed with Nick Fury.

And if it's true, they'll all be on the blu-ray

It doesn't, but what they're hoping is that people who downloaded the leaked version will go pay to see it "for real".

But I think what they fail to understand is that people who saw the leaked version probably are already solid in their decision to pay for it or not. Many fans will, many fans won't. Plenty of casual moviegoers simply won't, because the reason they download movies is because they're cheap and don't want to spend money.

Maybe with the different endings it will have people see the movie more than one time...it still wont make dark knight numbers..or iron man at that.

it could make discovering where the piracy occured easier. also if one area is pirated, other areas with different endings would theoretically not suffer as much from piracy because their endings were different, people would want to go to see those endings. i would think the endings would have to be quite different.

honestly i dont think it will help, the general public doesnt think that deeply. in fact i believe piracy helps the movie and music business, forces them to compete with themselves producing higher quality material thats worth going to the theater. plus it spikes peoples interest in the industries. there are people out there that go to the movies a couple of times a year as an afterthought. and there are people who are obsessed with all the latest blockbusters, or drama, or art films, giving them access to pirated films gets them interested in films in general, and you are a lot more likely to see them in the theater, or amassing large legitimate copies of films on bluray or dvd, as well as a few pirated copies here and there . but overall the industry is making a lot more money off these people, than the ones that careless. the music industry is the same, some people just listen to whatevers on the radio, dont really follow artists what the latest popular songs are, music piracy gets people interested in the music industry, and probably sells more legit copies of songs than anything else.

I can't see why they're freaking out over that "leak" nonsense, unless:

A. They think only fanboys are going to see it anyway, a sure kiss of death for their box office dreams (see Watchmen for details)

B. The whole thing is a shill...they have no other public relations hook to hang their hat on to get anybody into the theaters (a peek at their dismal expectations)

The comic book movie genre is oversaturated, overhyped, and drowning in a sea of fanboy noise. Hulk was just OK; Iron Man was eye candy wrapped around a very boring story; the Fantastic Four movies were simply terrible; Spiderman dribbled to a halt after a slow start; for some reason, Hollywood is just not getting this right.

X-Men films were the best of the genre, raising expectations for Wolverine that probably just won't measure up.

Piracy just raises the costs to fight piracy.

As a kid I always thought this would be an interesting gimmick, but only if the two endings were substantially different, and if they both made sense when you saw them. The reason I thought it'd be interesting, would just be to imagine people talking about the movie, and Friend 1 recommends it to Friend 2, saying "the ending is amazing" and then Friend 2 sees it, but sees the other ending, and then talks about the ending to Friend 1 again, and Friend 1 gets confused.

Somehow that was interesting to me.

I was too young to see Clue in theaters, but I always assumed the multiple endings were always shown together, as sort of a joke.

Weren't there rumors with X-men The Last Stand that there was going to be multiple endings and depending on where you lived you got a different ending. And that the DVD would have all endings in the film. I think Fox is playing the same game with Wolverine to build up hype.
