I guess they could... But if you do a little digging, you can find the whole press release for these. Would it have killed them to include a mention of these "coming soon" to blu ray?

If you've ever filled out one of the Sony surveys/contest entries for the 46" Bravia
they have a survey section of what movies would you like to see on BD next. They provide a list of titles and you choose three. Both Dark Crystal & Labyrinth are on there so I suspect we'll see them on BD eventually. |

Labyrinth will need to go through a heavy restoration, I was quite disappointed with the results on the DVD format. I have the SuperBit edition.
The optical special effect matte lines need to be fixed. It leaps out at you. If it was that bad on the DVD, imagine how bad it will look on Blu-Ray! |

Just curious, where is this survey and what other titles are listed on it as choices? Assuming most of it is stuff that's rumored / announced / delayed?

Labyrinth and Dark Crystal are owned by Henson, and merely distributed through Sony
So undoubtedly Henson would have to shoulder a large percentage of the burden for any restoration. In addition, Dark Crystal 2 is currently in pre-production, undoubtedly any HD release would come with that. |

As I understand it, the plan is for Disney to eventually buy out both films, so I doubt they'll spend a lot of time/money. Much more dissapointingly, I'm doubting Disney will release the others in HD till they have the set |

This is classic misunderstanding of "film" and what "restoration" means. People. The matte lines are exactly the way they looked on the finished film that was printed to (exquisite) 35mm prints and projected 50-feet wide at theaters in the 1980s. That's how the film looks. Just like you could see the cables lifting the flying car in Blade Runner in the theater. Just like you could see the bad matte-effects on some of the Star Wars films and David Lynch's Dune. No "restoration" needs to be done to correct these things. I saw a 35mm print of Labyrinth and Dune projected within the last few years (at a Henson film festival) and they looked gorgeous. Just digitize them to 1080p and we're good to go. Digitally air-brushing away matte effects that were visible and present in the original film prints isn't "resotration", it's "digital modification", and no connisour of these films should consider it necessary or even desireable. If someone can't handle the look of the film, with its 1980s optical/analog special effects, then you don't need to watch these movies. There are modern CGI films that might better suit your tastes. |
