Hello all,
I've searched the forum for info. on the following, but I didn't find anything. I would like to highlight the fact that there are 2 distinct audio versions for "french" dubbed movies: -french from France (also called "french from Metropole", or "Parisian") -and french dubbed in Quebec (Canada) These 2 audio versions are *very* different. I don't say that one is better than the other one, - I often prefer the "real" french from France version, but not always: Transformers's Quebec french version is "better" to me - but I mean it would be very helpful to have this information registered in database. In rare cases, this information is specified on some BD release on the back cover. - ie. "V for Vendetta" as follow: "Francais 5.1 (Both Parisian and Dubbed in Quebec)" - but of course, most of the time this information is sadly not present. Over here in France (I'm a french guy, who guessed ? ![]() Meanwhile the DVD release includes the real french version, or even the HD-DVD release !! (ie. Superman Returns (2006)) So there is a real gap in information here, and I think a quality site like this one may be pioneer in the "official" registering of this information. Well, sorry for the long post (I hope it was not too boring for people not really caring of this issue ![]() (And please tell me if this thread has been started elsewhere) Thx. |

well when you view cover art, its states French and thats what is input in the database. Even Canadian releases state ' French' Audio and dont denote that they are a variation of the French Language. Its something that would be hard to do for just that reason. We cant just assume because its canadian it is a variant as you said yourself some France films have the Canadian French Version
From that this maybe something you would need to address with the studios themselves |

Yes sure, the faulty guys are the Studios.
But I think they need to be "pushed" in the good direction. And this "push" could be influenced by communities like this one I think. Anyway it would not be easy to get this information indeed. This relies on user contributions (VFF or VFQ as we say over here). I already saw some threads (in french forum) trying to sum up this info. for U.S. BD release (with region info.), it's quite helpful but it's not exhaustive, and that's the flaw. Here in BD.com, I see a very "professional" database. Adding this France/Quebec information would make it even more complete I would say. I mean: if this info. is to be collected somewhere, it's definitively here. (not easy, but flawless is not easy to achieve ![]() PS: About "V for Vendetta" I mentioned earlier, the BD jacket (at least the U.S. BD release I have) does specify the french version details: "Parisian AND Quebec", maybe because both France & Quebec versions are available... but this information is not registered in BD.com. Is it something I should spot in "Report data, incorrect data, bugs, errors, etc" ? (I see that there is no "back" cover available neither, if you need it I can make a scan...) |

Hello IceJazz,
You are certainly welcome to report any data you believe needs to be incorporated into the official reviews (or temp listings) here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/forumdisplay.php?f=62 As far as providing complete and, more importantly, accurate info for Canadian and Gallic releases, I am welcoming any feedback you, or other French speakers, are willing to provide. I must point out, however, that even major distributors such as Studio Canal, Gaumont, TF1, Carlotta, Metropolitan, and Alliance and TVA Quebec in Canada routinely fail to be as diligent and accurate in their listings as they should be. This isn't an excuse as far as our team is concerned, but it is certainly something that makes it very difficult to provide reliable language info on releases of interest to French speakers. Also, please feel free to contact me personally if you believe that there is anything I could assist you with ![]() Pro-B Last edited by pro-bassoonist; 05-05-2009 at 09:52 PM. |

This reminds me of a scientific brochure I had translated at the company I previously worked at. We sent our French office the text from the translator and they bitterly complained that we had hired a French Canadian to do the work. The translation service denied this and I had no way of knowing who was right.
We also had the brochure translated into German and our office in Idstein bitterly complained about the quality of the German. Of course they couldn't blame Canadians, though. The third language we needed was Italian, but unlike the French or Germans, our Italian group simply read through the text and made the changes they wanted. Which is exactly what we needed. ![]() |
