Default Criterion Announcement

Announcement from the Criterion website including some useful info about 'Second printing' text being added to all corrected copies -

Quote:
Good news, everyone. The Dressed to Kill street date is moving to September 8. Thanks to the concerns of our customers and the efforts of reviewers at websites like DVDBeaver.com, who helped point out the problems with the release early, we were able to make the fix before the bulk of orders had shipped. We will, of course, replace any faulty copies that may find their way into circulation, but we are working to ensure that all customers, including those who have placed preorders, and all major retailers will have corrected product in time for the new street date. To be certain that you have the correct version, look for the words “Second printing” on the back of the package and on the disc.

Hopefully people can shut up now that they're fixing it and pushing the date.

Ok, unfortunately, this means I have to cancel my order.

I leave for vacation on the 8th of September and there is no way my wife will let me delay departure so I can meet the mailman....lol

All this means for my reality, this will now become part of the next Criterion Flash Sale or the B&N November half price special...

Heh. I love how they credit DVDBeaver with pointing out the problem, even though Tooze said it looked fine to him in spite of the stretching.

Even though I love this movie, I have no plans of upgrading from my regular. Blu ray. However, it is good to know that if I ever do, Criterion was quick to correct the concerns. Between this and their replacement of faulty aging discs last year, they just may be the most respectable Blu Ray dealer out there! Kudos!

While I do give credit to Criterion for doing the right thing, none of this would have happened without the people who complained and I'm assuming this site's reviewer for contacting them. Members of this forum were contacting them right after the DVD Beaver screenshots were put up and were getting that canned "director approved" response. DVDBeaver definitely gets credit for posting those screenshots that started the uproar, but it sure seems like it was very much the uproar (and I'll bet this site's review) that eventually got them to take a second (or maybe third) look at what was going on.

In the end, Criterion definitely did right by their customers, though.

My Amazon order says: Release date - September 8 now, but it also says "Expected Delivery August 31-September 3"

Talking First time to celebrate a delay of a release. Its a good reason for this delay.

We're writing about the order you placed on May 29, 2015 (Order# 104-5928759-6888244). Unfortunately, the release date for the item(s) listed below has changed, and we need to provide you with a new delivery estimate based on the new release date:

"Dressed to Kill (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]"
Estimated arrival date: September 08, 2015

I am with everyone else. I do not mind waiting longer to get the right version. I knew Criterion would take care of us fans.

Indeed, but if there's one thing to be said about Mr Tooze, it's that he does have an impressive turnaround with getting these screengrabs up there on his site nice and early for release after release after release. Yes it inevitably means his assessment of the disc is half-assed and sometimes they cock up the screengrabs, but remove DVDBeaver from the equation of this entire furore and the fans wouldn't have cottoned on so quickly and those e-mails of complaint would have been sent much later & maybe Criterion wouldn't have had the time to delay the release outright like they're going to!

The new date is interesting, because the first release came out on Sep 6 2011, same day as Scarface. I remembered because it was just before my birthday.

DVDBeaver remains one of my primary sources of information as to the general quality and content of new releases. Tooze seems to be a nice guy too, he is a film lover and always polite and forthcoming every time I wrote him. But even in the heydey of DVD many of his PQ assessments had to be taken with a healthy grain of salt. As for his HD "reviews" he doesn't know his ass from a DVD upscale. He desperately wants to love some releases because they just HAVE to be great. I don't read most of his stuff anymore, just look at the caps and make my own judgment from that...

Just saw the news on DVD Beaver about the release date being pushed to fix some issues. Very pleased as I wasn't planning on picking this up until November anyways. Kudos to Criterion Releasing.

If Criterion actually checked their discs before replicating, they would've caught the issue. Shouldn't be up to one review site to find a company's errors, especially when they only release a few titles a month and was supposedly "director approved" (which turns out it wasn't, or DePalma would've caught it, too). Absolutely NO ONE even looked at this disc, and that's the sad thing.

Read Criterion's statement again:
Quote:
Brian De Palma did ask for a change to the geometry of the scan, but it was to address the distortion he saw in the image, not to apply it. Unfortunately, that change was never carried over in the final product, and the resulting discs are wrong.
De Palma noticed the issue we all did, and asked for it to be fixed. That never happened.
