Good to know, Robert! I've grown tired of a few people that continue to drone on "wait until 8K comes along, it will be a revolutionary upgrade. 4K is only evolutionary", and your comments seem to indicate if anything the opposite.

The new 2016 TV standards are set for the next 20 - 30 years.

8k won't be a home format in the true sence

SD to HD was the only "revolutionary" upgrade IMHO. Everything else will be "evolutionary" until a whole new TV format comes along.

I bet people said the exact same thing about vinyl and that's selling more today than it has done in the last 10+years. They said CDs were on the way out, yet I see no sign of it going anywhere soon.

Maybe if compression becomes good enough to match the quality of physical media I could see streaming taking over, but ISPs need to come a long way in terms of data caps and throttling before we can take on an all digital consumption environment.
Streaming will always be crap compared to physical media. Even with high internet speeds the compression in streaming ruins what could be a beautiful picture. I have even noticed blocking in the blacks streaming 4K material on Amazon, Netflix and Vudu. And Vudu needs to gets its act together because the ONLY way we can get 4K from them is through Roku 4 (seems our UHD TVs and UHD blu ray players are pushing 1080p on Vudu app). Give me physical media anyday over streaming because I am one finicky videophile wanting my images to look their best.

I just find the very large letterbox kind of distracting. No need for an uproar from the peanut gallery. It's personal preference....

If you get the right display and watch in a dark room there is no letterbox.

Looking at AVSFORUM it looks like this player has all sorts of major video quality glitches, especially in the advanced video features. Further, it apparently does not work with IR blasters as it uses some proprietary IR coding. A lot of people returning and waiting for Panasonic.

This is something only a plasma/OLED/dedicated theater room + quality screen/projector combo user could appreciate.

I am neither. Although I used to be 2 out of the 3.

But I'd never zoom in...blasphemy!

Blu-ray
Deep color off 8 bits
Deep color on 12 bits

UHD
Deep color off 10 bits
Deep color on 12 bits

This is exactly as I would expect. And Deep Color should not have to be on with a UHD disc for HDR and WCG.

HDR always comes with WCG and 10-bit pass-through and PQ "gamma." HDR is a very big upgrade to 4K image performance.

HDR with all of its additional accompanying upgrades is a very significant advancement and is a complete redesign of the TV system.

I don't make sweeping statements towards or against anyone no matter their background
But the hyperbolic nature of that post was strong.

HDR is a grading choice not everyone will adopt and will not suit all content

Yep, that's exactly as I'd expect too as regular Blu is 8-bit and UHD Blu is 10-bit. It sounds as if when they're using Deep Colour with UHD that the player is completely screwing the remapping to 12-bit. Not surprising really, given how up in the air some of these standards still are.

You cannot take away the fact that the black bands make the image smaller. That's why I feel films framed at 1.78 are bigger and badder than the smaller 2.35 image (plus 3D looks more immersive in 1.78. Look at James Cameron's Avatar and Titanic in 1.85 without much cropping from the sides). The BIGGER the image, the better 4K looks!
