When you enable 2-Step Verification (also known as two-factor authentication), you add an extra layer of security to your account. You sign in with something you know (your password) and something you have (a code sent to your phone).

So say somebody cracks your email and password. In the past they have your account. Using this method they would also need your phone and have the generated one time code that's text'd to it to log in/purchase things. An unlikely scenario.
