Friend or Chingoo by Kwak Kyung-taek is my fave Korean movie.

I also really like 3-Iron by Kim Ki-duk.

My Dear Enemy featuring Secret Sunshine's Jeon Do-yeon is really charming.

Memories of Murder is my favorite Korean film! I also really like Silmido and J.S.A.

Ryoo Seung-wan's output especially Crying Fist.

Daesepo Naughty Girls is hilarious.

The Good. The Bad. The Weird. (Korean version. The international cut is kaka.)

There's a Japanese movie by a Korean director named Hula Girls which is delightful.

Kim Ki-Duk's filmography is a brilliant, challenging mess.

Train to Busen is on Netflix right now. It's a must see. A few missteps but overall a great film.

Yes, THE HOUSEMAID (1960) is an excellent film noir available in the Scorsese World Cinema collection. A Korean student told me that the dialogue, however, had an odd archaic flavor that was harder to follow than modern Korean. (Of course it's an "old" movie.)

Haven't seen THE AIMLESS BULLET or THE EVIL STAIRS, but I'll also second films like POETRY, SECRET SUNSHINE, MOTHER, and I SAW THE DEVIL, and THE HOST, a definite variety of styles, stories, and themes.

Not sure if this is essential, but one of the best films I've seen this year is 'A Taxi Driver'. Top movie this year in South Korea and is 9th all-time (South Korea measures in admissions vs. gross).

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6878038/

Hoping it'll have a blu-ray release.

Glad to see at least one country does it in a way that makes sense.

My top 5 South Korean movies:

Christmas in August - The film that started my interest in SK movies.
My Sassy Girl - A brilliant comedy with some genuinely moving moments
Failan - Beautiful and heartbreaking
...ing - same as above!
The Last Present - Wonderful finale and the soundtrack is terrific.

What's the status with this one? I love this film and would love to upgrade my old DVD.

If anyone can understand French...

The 4K scan of Memories of Murder will be released by La Rabbia in July, in a similar edition to their Sorcerer edition (which remains the best edition, to this day).

I live in hope that this gets a Blu Ray release. Cannot believe it hasn't had one yet!

The caps on caps-a-holic are disappointing. Looks like they did a 'Scanners' on this.

I'm not a fan of the change. Apparently, it's the director's choice. I'll keep this and the Korean blu.
