Default Yet another import thread (Japan)

I was just wondering if anyone here has ever been taxed for a purchase of a dvd/cd (or 2) costing between $70-$80. Standard mail, no ups or GSP or fedex involved. The item(s) I'm looking at is from Japan. While I'm sure there are many who got away with nothing extra (they sometimes overlook small items under $100), I'd like to know what to expect in case they do ding it.

There is nothing online that gives me a good estimate of what to expect.

If you do get dinged it would be the Canada Post fee ($10) plus tax on the $70-$80.

I haven't ordered anything from Japan but I have from Asia a few times and that is what I had to pay when I got dinged (the package was valued close to $300 though).

The tax would be, I assume, GST/HST depending on my province?

Yes that would GST/HST.

Are you ordering from Amazon Japan?

No, ebay.

I haven't actually pulled the trigger. I'm still weighing whether paying possibly an extra $20 or so on top of the order is really worth it.

Plus there are the rumors of Canadian customs being tougher lately because of NAFTA negotiations, but I'm not sure how much stock to put into a few isolated occurrences posted online lately.

NAFTA has nothing to do with Japan.

I agree, but I'm also skeptical that they are any tougher on items coming from the U.S. right now. They just get so many import items that they can't possibly process every single one valued over $20, coming from the U.S. or not. I still think it's random, like in any year.
