I would also like to know details about this one. I'm about to bite the bullet and just order it. Would be nice to know upfront if this is worth it or not. Even if it's upscaled and looks better than the dvd's I may still bite as I don't currently own them on dvd.

**UPDATE** Looks like I'll be the guinea pig for this one!! I just ordered it from Zavvi. Will post my findings on it once it's in hand.

I think it's pretty guaranteed to be an upscale just like Andromeda also by the same label.

Any news on the one and if it's an upscale? Or how the quality is, if it's an upscale?

Sorry... I received it, but hadn't opened it before now. I'm about to open it now and will post my findings.

So... I opened it up and popped in Season 1 Disc 1. I only scanned through a bit of the first episode but here's what I found:

1)Yes, it's Region Free. Launched fine on an old Sony player (Region A).
2)First thing I noticed about the picture is that it was in 16:9. I haven't watched the show in ages, but I would've guessed that the original season would've been 4:3 but I could be wrong. I didn't notice any odd framing that would leave me to believe it was cropped to accommodate a 16:9 screen, but I did skip around so I can't say for sure. It definitely wasn't stretched, so either it was originally a 16:9 picture or they cropped/reframed it to be 16:9.
3)The picture looked decent, but I was definitely seeing some edge enhancement, but still a much better picture than a dvd. My eyes are really sensitive to interlacing in a video and I thought I saw some interlacing here and there (nothing terrible and something most people wouldn't notice). When I finished playing it I put it in my computer and confirmed that it is indeed 1080i. BTW... I was watching this on a 42" Samsung plasma in my bedroom. Not a top of the line tv, but one that does have a really nice picture to it. Again... I thought the overall picture looked good.

I never had this show on DVD and I remember in the US they went out of print for a long time and were very pricey on the secondary market. I don't know if they were ever re-released on dvd in the US, but I can definitely say I would take this set over any DVD release. I did see some edge enhancement but I didn't notice any "jaggies" that i normally associate with upscaling. Not saying that it's not an upscale, I'm just saying it looks pretty good for an upscale (assuming that it is).

Everything I just posted is a quick overview, having skipped around 1 episode. I'll try to take some screen caps soon.

Here's what my pc shows for the details of Season 1 Disc 1:

Thanks for the review. I have the US DVDs and they where 16x9 widescreen also, so the framing is right. Going to pick this set up.

Safe to conclude then it's an upscale as a true HD release should have been 1080p/24 for a start.

I've never watched the dvd's so I have nothing to compare it to. I wouldn't want someone purchasing these based on the few minutes that I watched, but in my opinion I'd much rather have these over dvd's.

Buy at your own risk. I can tell you that they are region free, and the little bit that I watched had a decent picture.

I'll try to post pics when I get a free minute.

To anyone still on the fence about this release, watching on a 65 inch screen, it's an obvious uptick from watching the Region 1 DVD's I also have, which are anamorphic btw. I recommend getting this set, as the picture is clearer with better defined details and colours. I haven't been able to see any anomalities so far, except for some very brief instances at the beginning of a couple of the episodes. The sound quality is also better than the DVD's.

Can someone please tell me how the discs are packaged? Is it individual cases inside?
Thanks
