Does that mean this will get a standard case release, which will be available to buy on Amazon.de?

You have to differentiate between the different types of bans in Germany.

The one ban Crying Freeman was under is called "Index" (blacklist) and it means that a film is harmful for consumation by youths. If a movie is blacklisted, it is prohibited to advertize or sell it openly in public (as well as online).

Then there is an actual ban (which is issued by a court if it deems a movie to be so violent that it actually violates German law). Such titles are prohibited to be sold altogether. The 1978 "Dawn of the Dead" is an example for such a movie.

Yes, and that is/was correct. A ban does not make it illegal (in general), there are restrictions, e.g. no advertising, sales to adults only etc. Violation of these restrictions is a crime (penal law). A film becomes illegal when it violates e.g. 131 of German penal law, resulting in a confiscation.

No word on an upcoming Amazon release as of today. The media book can now be sold and advertised "in public", so this is what's going to happen first.

And a standard case version too: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07CPDVRFP/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3JWKAKR8 XB7XF

I think its just a placeholder release date for now though, as it states December 31 2018.

Amazon DE just shipped my steelbook even though the product page says "currently unavailable". The standard amaray version still says December 31, 2018.

Yes, because it's already sold out again (factory-wise). Dealers might still have stock, but Turbine shipped all copies produced.

You can still get this from rakete-shop.de - we even had a pre-order with the option to pick the serial number.

Amazon.de seems to have gotten another batch (it's available right now).

Fascinating how good this title sells. On the other hand, it's a) a steelbook, b) it's both an English-friendly steelbook and disc, and c) it's actually region-free.
