Maybe for other people...but if they wont finish the show in bluray, what's the point in even starting?

Ridiculously cheap. I bought long ago at a much higher price. They're likely clearing them out. A shame they initially priced too high and consumers want entire seasons for >$20 at this point.

You could replace the season 1 DVD set if you own one. I have the complete series DVD set, but for the season 1 I could watch the Blu-ray instead. Better than DVD

I can see the advantage of that, however, my shelving system has all my DVD's on one side and blurays on the other. If I start collecting a show, I would prefer ALL be either DVD or bluray, but not divided.

I already have season one on DVD, and need to start adding to the collection, but I was waiting to see if the blurays would take off, and they didn't. So I guess I will stick to dvds and skip the season one in blu.

Paramount clearly made a mistake treating this show like it was Star Trek - basing future releases on how well the first season sold. When the majority target audience has likely already invested in the show on DVD, it's a hard enough sell to get them to upgrade to BD in it's entirety, much less only one season without even so much as a hint, much less the needed promise that the rest will follow. I'm a huge fan, and put off buying the first season for years, until I finally realized this was it, all that we'd be getting. The people in Paramount's home entertainment marketing dept really didn't think things through or are just completely out of touch with collectors.

That said, as someone who owns both this BD and the complete DVD set, Paramount put a lot more into the BD release of Season 1 than they did it's DVD counterpart. Like the DVDs for seasons 2 and 3, the original sponsor skits are included. However, unlike the dvds, you have the option of watching them fully integrated back into the show along with other promotional sequences that the DVDs didn't bother with, like Andy and Opie singing Post's theme song. Also, the BD release of the first season includes "Return to Mayberry", which isn't included in the complete series box. But for us, I think the biggest highlight of the season 1 BD was seeing the original episode length skit that spawned this series from The Danny Thomas Show.

ORDERED!! For $12, why not? And using credit card reward points, I'm actually getting it for "free!" I'm not the biggest fan of the series, so I won't lose any sleep over the rest of the show not coming to blu-ray. But a whole season of classic TV for $12?!? Including the reunion movie and the Danny Thomas pilot show?!? They made me an offer I couldn't refuse!

Hmm, the price is tempting, but I've never seen it. Any similar shows?

Yeah, all of em

It's a pretty standard sitcom. It's your standard mix of charismatic lead, quirky supporting cast, odd situations, everyday situations, the occasional morality play - think pretty much any family oriented sitcom and then think 'very, very good'.

The first season in particular is very strong.

If you like sitcoms from that era (or really any era) it's probably worth twelve bucks.

The Gomer Pyle Show spun off from Andy. I wouldn't really say they're very similar in terms of situations, settings, etc, but they're from the same period, with the same style of humor and sensibilities. I Love Lucy, The Dick Van Dyke Show are others from the period. Of course, Don Knotts pretty much acts the same in everything he's done. So, if you've seen any of his movies or other TV series... you're probably already familiar with the way he plays Barney Fife in this series.

The first complete series DVD set I own has Return to Mayberry.

Anyway, I agree that the season 1 BD set is worth for the extras alone. PQ is great, too.

I just picked this up and it had very little to due with the low price I paid. The initial price point was never an issue for me. I just wasn't interested in purchasing classic TV shows on Blu-ray one season at time. Slow rolling releases a season at a time for older TV shows is retarded. The suits set themselves up for failure. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. They know good and well this TV show would sell well on Blu-ray if a complete series set were offered. Invest the time and money to offer a "quality" complete series set on Blu-ray and I'll pay for a copy at a premium without thinking twice about it. In fact, several of my friends and family members would as well.

Yeah, the re-release was missing one disc for extras (the first complete set had 40 discs).

The same is true for Hogan’s Heroes DVD set where the re-release was missing one disc (28 discs for the first release vs. 27 discs for the recent re-release).

Yeah, I've been watching MASH too, great show. I also recorded the whole series of Frasier in HD as well.
