I'd preordered An Actor's Revenge last week before I realised that Criterion was also putting out a version of their own. But the specs on both equal each other out and the 4k source seems to be coming from the same place, so I'm keeping my BFI copy.

The Magic Flute is now in HMV's 2 for £25:

Never seen it - may add MoC's 'Cure' into the order now

They're both released on 23rd April.

Looks like La Belle et la BÍte might be pushed back to July if the Amazon listing is to be believed. That's fine with me as I have way too much of interest in the next couple of months, and also means I don't have to decide between Ichikawa and Cocteau (likely gonna grab An Actor's Revenge once it's in HMV's 2 for £25 offer).

Richard III - 90's adaptation of Shakespeare's famous political intrigue drama set in an alternate 1930's Britain in the time of civil war. Ian McKellen made his international name with this film, having both written the screenplay and played the lead part with relish - he went on to play Gandalf in LoTR and Dumbledore in Harry Potter. There's nothing by way of subtlety here. The characters are one-dimensional and it plays almost like a farce. But everyone seems to be having a good time and the film certainly moves fast with some spectacle during the battle scenes. BFI's blu-ray gives a wonderful A/V presentation with rich color in the settings and costumes, and some bombastic 5.1 surround sound during the skirmishes with tanks and planes.

Haven't yet dipped into the extras and booklet.

Indeed it was the late Richard Harris. Ian McKellen turned down the role after Harris' death citing Harris' 'disapproval' of him. Michael Gambon played the character consequently.

It's also not set in "our" 1930's Britain but an alternate one where the Houses of York, Lancaster and Tudor are vying to rule as fascist dictatorships.

My mistake, sorry
I have till date seen only a couple of the HP films (not in order) and I think in one Dumbledore didn't feature at all. I possibly mixed up the speculations of Ian playing Wizard in 2 big fantasy franchises as confirmation of him playing DD.

Don't worry about it.

Great film, can't agree it's a farce though. It's a Shakespeare tragedy in modern day dress, it's a pretty bleak tale this one in any adaptation. Maybe you just find the language a bit fruity? Are you familiar with much Shakespeare?

BTW, I'd highly recommend this which was released as a companion to Richard III in the BFI's Shakespeare season. Not just for Shakespeare fans but for anyone with a deep interest in the art of cinema.

I am reasonably familiar with Shakespeare and have seen several film adaptations of his work, including the Welles and Polanski's Macbeth, Branagh's Hamlet, Taymor's Titus, Fiennes' Coriolanus (not to mention the more remote adaptations like the Kurosawa films or Vishal Bharadwaj films). While I have not read the text of Richard III, I felt that in this story the characters came across as one-dimensional, and more than in the other films I've seen I felt here people sounded like they were reciting the lines rather than speaking them.

The McKellen film jettisons around two-thirds of Shakespeare's text, which at over 3,700 lines is his fourth longest play (of 38). Three dimensionality is probably harder to achieve for any actor who's lost most of his or her part.....
