In DVD and Blu-ray? Yes. I think it was only release on VHS.

I remember like 9 years ago, when I first heard of this movie (can you blame me? I was like 10) I watch it and love it, and then I foundt out about the Director's Cut and found a bootleg DVD with it on the net. I wonder if there's still a way of getting it.

No, it's on DVD. I have a copy. It's one of the earlier japanese dvd releases.

The special edition VHS had the unrated cut.

I remember that release from 1997 vividly because I was traveling to my family's cabin for Thanksgiving and stopped at a Walmart in the middle of NOWHERE for something and, to my surprise, the store had the VHS copies out for sale a week early.

I snatched up a copy of it and watched it once I arrived. It was the first time seeing the film uncut which was cool. If I remember correctly, the special edition contained two tapes - one with the uncut version and one with the commentary track. Plus it was housed in a big clear container with lobby cards containing 3 variations on the "screaming girl" key art and a Scream-branded phone calling card.

It's also on a Scandinavian dvd which I grabbed back in the day (since it had more extras and was cheaper than Japan). Unfortunately non-anamorphic. Also exists on laser, used to have that and might still.

Fun note, there is only one commentary track and it's for the unrated version, but most play over the rated (like the dvd and BD). Easy for the studio to be lazy since runtime is basically the same, and just some alternate footage here and there, plus an extra 20 seconds or so.

Wow, that's the VHS version I bought (and still have) but I don't think I ever knew it contained the unrated version.

I picked up the StudioCanal German release just recently, is the Lionsgate transfer as weak? I'm noticing a 4 star video review here for it, which certainly doesn't line up with what I just witnessed on the StudioCanal disc...

The reviews for the Scream trilogy (1-3) are a joke here. Not one of these transfers deserves more than 2 stars.

Yeah, I had a look at Capsaholic, the German Studiocanal edition of the first film is the same transfer, just slightly dimmer for some reason (perhaps to try and hide the transfer's crappy, overly-digital appearance?)

Scream 2 is identical on both discs.

To clear things up, how does the US version of Scream 1 handle the opening scene - does the title appear immediately, or does it appear after the Barrymore opening scene?

It'd be nice if these were given a new scan for uhd and/or remastered blu editions. The franchise has really declined in popularity unfortunately and I'm surprised the tv series is still going with as few views as it's getting. But the first film was a trendsetter at the time for re-writing a lot of rules and changing up many of the conventions of horror, especially slashers, with self awareness and satire. New Nightmare was arguably fairly similar in that regard but Scream took it to a different level and really popularized the concepts.

Ha! Yes! That's the VHS set I have as well. I was in college when that one came out and picked it up for myself with some money I got for Xmas.

Man, I used to love this series. Even though 4 was a bit of a disappointment and I'm glad the series came to an end, I'd love to pick up a remastered/restored 4 film set on blu if Lionsgate ever gets around to it. Nostalgic memories for this franchise.

You guys don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell of Scream Factory picking these up, right? I mean, imagine the advertising possibilities...

This is ripe for an Abbott and Costello routine of some kind.

Some of the non-special VHS copies also have the Unrated Cut; I know because I bought mine with Scream 2 and lo and behold, found myself watching stuff I hadn't seen in theaters! It was full-screen, too. I'd reckon it was an error in the preparation of the cassettes. Or just an incredible rarity!

Is it true that the Japanese BD of Scream 1 is currently the best looking one available? What about 2 and 3?

Looking back at it, i can tell that When A Stranger Calls inspired the opening scene of this movie, which I appreciate since it's one of my favorite horror movies (only for the opening 20 minutes though).

I also wonder how many people would have fallen for the Friday the 13th trick question for Drew Barrymore.

The calls in general also owe a lot to Prom Night and Black Christmas. Actually, Black Christmas’ source of inspiration for the calls (“The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs” urban legend) was the same as When A Stranger Calls (“The calls are coming from inside the house!,” etc).

I used to have the uncut laserdisc. Once you've seen it uncensored, you can never go back to the theatrical version. It's mind-boggling that such a huge hit is still unavailable uncut on Blu-Ray in the States. I'm boycotting all cut releases, so if it never surfaces uncut on BD I'll never see SCREAM again. A shame, because it's easily Craven's finest post-A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET offering, in my opinion.

The differences between the R-rated and the Unrated version are negligible. It's just 6 seconds and most of it is shot extensions of stuff you see anyway. While I'd prefer the unrated out of principle I'd be happy enough if they'd just re-released these with a new transfer.
