Organize your films by genre. Drama, Comedy, Disney/Pixar, 3D, Super Hero/CBM, Acition, Western, Kung Fu/Samurai, Sci-Fi, Horror, Documentaries, Television Shows, and Anime. And sometimes, the occasional mini-section by director (like Tarantino), sub-genre, Criterion, etc.

When you organize by genre then you can decide what kind of movie you're in the mood for first and then look at the associated titles. They are still in alphabetical order within each category.
This is what I do and why I do it, except for the alpha in each catagory and a few more catagories. The catagories are mostly just in order of what feels right to me except Disney which is chronological and Marvel which is phase order. Makes it especially easy when the wife wants to watch something.

Really the only downside to catagories is when something fits into a few of them and you have to decide where it goes.

Due to limited shelf space, the TV series and animation DVDs and Blurays have the shelves. Everything else is in big Case Logic binders alphabetically. It didn't take long to get used to, and I created a database on my phone with all of the movie information, so if my parents come to visit they can search what I have based on genre or year.

4K and BD are separate, alphabetical besides series which are chronological. I've been debating about putting the MCU separate in chronological order.

My issue with genre sorting is that there are just SO MANY movies that could fit into multiple genres. I'd go crazy trying to decide which genre every one of my movies fits into.

Right now my collection goes: Criterion A-Z, Arrow A-Z, 4K A-Z, and Blu-ray A-Z.

I've considered mixing all 4 categories together alphabetically, but all those Criterions look so good next to each other. Might eventually mix my 4K and regular blu-rays though, but right now I have less than 30 4K titles so it's a non issue.

I separate DVD, Blu, & 4K alphabetically in their own respective shelf space.

I've considered separating 4K, and I frequently think about and consider different way to organize, but for now they are just included with my blus in my current organization.

Tv shows are on their own smaller shelves to the side, Blu, DVD, and 4K all mixed together, alphabetically.

Movies are on the main shelf. Large collections and special editions on top. The first shelf row has my Mondo X steelbooks, Marvel MCU, and Criterion in their own sections. Then the rest of the movies follow alphabetically, blu, 3D, 4K, steelbooks, etc all mixed together. Bottom shelves have Imax and documentary movies, and large cases. DVD movies (the few I have left) are separated out at the bottom.

All formats together ordered by production year, then alphabetically.

The only "weird" things I do (mostly for shelf space) are:

for tv-series, I put them (digipacks and the like) in multi-disc cases.

for 4K, I usually throw away the blu-ray disc and put the UHD disc in a slim case.

Then if I have the time and if I'm in the mood I design my own covers.

DVD's are annoying combined with Blu-ray and 4K. Blu-ray and 4K cases are the same size so no problem.

I keep blu-ray and 4K sets all together on my shelves, broken down into four different sections: films, documentaries, TV series, and music (concerts, opera performances and the like), the first three sorted alphabetically by title and music blus by artist.

I considered breaking films down further by genre, but honestly that seems like more trouble than it's worth. Many movies fit into more than one genre, and as my collection becomes larger I don't really want to have to think about whether I filed this or that movie under "action" or "sci-fi", etc. Having every movie alphabetically eliminates that.

In the case of some film series that aren't necessarily titled in a way that lends itself to alphabetization, I file them in chronological order under the name of the series (e.g. Pink Panther, Planet of the Apes, Friday the 13th, etc).

I don't have many DVDs left... according to my collection here on the site only 113 titles. I'm hoping that one day that number is far smaller as more of the content is released on blu-ray or 4k blu-ray. For that stuff that never (or can't) see an HD release, I'll keep the DVDs, but I keep them stored in a box in my basement. I've ripped all of them to ISOs on an external hard drive, and when I feel like watching one I'll just mount the image and play it that way.

My collection is sorted by distributor first, then by format (2D, 3D, 4K), then by type (digibook/digipack, steelbook, slipcover/slipless), then by title alphabetically with some exceptions.

Heh, it's weird to me that a lot of people separate them. Especially in UHD's case since the packaging is the same size.

It's interesting to read the different ways people choose to organize their collection; in some cases it makes it clear what they prioritize as collectors... packaging, film purist, etc.

I don't usually bother with any kind of order, they're all lumped together and strewn over shelves, storage boxes, on and inside cupboards, the floor.

Must be quite something to find the movie you want to watch.

DVD's separate, BD & UHD together.

I sort them by just a handful of "main" genres. Use too many and you'll drive yourself mad. I then proceed by year, alphabetized.

Obviously there are some one-offs like multi-collections by director, multi-packs that don't make sense, etc., but the moral of my story is, don't drive yourself crazy. Enjoy your collection.
