I popped in Batman vs Superman last night and damn, that is a very good looking movie. Made me like the movie a little more. Just a little. Not sure if it was the movie because I never watched the Bluray on my Plasma but in some dark scenes where it's mostly dark you get elevated blacks. Then in a lot of scenes where you have dark backgrounds with lighting and shadowing it's black. It was weird. The HDR at the end with Batman using the guns on Supes and the end fight with Doomsday is bright. Very bright. Like close your eyes bright

For what this is worth, I can barely detect any difference between Mid and High on the ZD9's dimming either.

So I finally plugged my Comcast box to the tv and decided to watch football. Idk if it's Comcast or what but the games look awful. Games looked better on my Plasma. All picture modes have everything washed out and overly bright. Guessing because Contrast is near max on all modes? Probably going to have to go into Custom and adjust

I do have to ask though, hopefully Robert take a a glance at this page. But on the screen you get that i have shown below is it supposed to be a smooth transition from dark grey to light grey? Or, is there supposed to be horizontal bars like that?

As far as the Netflix thing they're talking about on AVS. Yes, the Black Netflix screen does get bright with looks like some grey clouding. They look like clouds. But it's not as bad as what that pic that person posted. But, on the menu where you choose who's page you want to go to (yours, friends or family) the black background is full on horizontal bars.

I don't know if it's the Netflix page, but then again I do get it on the screen you get when you have nothing plugged in or on on the input.

Netflix does kick you into Standard mode when you go on there or turn off Netflix Calibration mode even though you have it on something else. Standard on this set is almost like Vivid. It's close.

When I see the gray screen when there’s nothing being fed to a particular input, all I see is an entirely uniform screen. I don’t see a darker image up top fading into a lighter bottom half of the screen, nor do I see any horizontal bars. There’s aomething wrong there and I’d consider getting a replacement.

It’s a little concerning that both you and another member at that ‘other’ forum are seeing this. I’m actually awaiting a replacement for my Z9F… meant to be delivered tomorrow. And honestly, I’m sort of scared now based on what I’m seeing others report, lol.

Like, my TV is prereeeeeeeetty much fine, but I see a minor column of light bleed along the right hand side of the screen. It’s a ‘once you see it, it can’t be unseen’ sort of thing, and for $3500, I believe the expectation with this television is that we shouldn’t be seeing such a thing. Others have told me they don’t see this on their television at all so… I’m rolling the dice and hoping to get something that’s even better.

If my replacement arrives tomorrow and I see what you’re seeing, I’m going to tweak out, lol.

I think the horizontal bars are just a result of the android interface rendering errors, I saw them on the Z9D and 940E occasionally but never in content.

That clouding on the avsforum is pretty funny and typical of LCDs, especially low quality ones with low contrast ratios. Would definitely prevent a "zero-DSE" image and have an unfavorable impact on uniformity.

I would have never questioned it until I saw the Netflix bars on the menu. I have yet to see it on the Panasonic 820 menu screen that's also black. Then again, that's on Cinema Pro 2 while Netflix kicks on Standard. Big difference. So maybe I should check out the Panny menu in Standard? Or it's just menus on the Sony Tv. But I did question some Blue (shade) daytime scenes in Mad Max of seeing things.

Besides that, PQ wise i haven't noticed anything. I do want to grab some slides to try out

There may be a bug in Sony's picture processing that you can't turn off that may be causing some of these anomalies because when you are watching content they are not visible. If it were related to the panel, etc, you would see this all the time with content. This set is so new that i would wait to see what the next firmware updates do.

Edit: Just read some of your previous posts and you said you were noticing this with Standard PM. Since your set is calibrated, you should be using either Custom Pro1 or Custom Pro2 so when you use your built in apps, make sure you are using one of these PMs.

I asked jrref to reply as he is our professional calibrator and has communicated this through proper channels to Sony to look into.

I believe the issue is related to the scene being a low grade compressed signal that is created in SDR.

I understand it can be thought of with some concern, but if the banding can't be seen in normal content this should be a non-issue

I hope that’s the case, but it’s strange that I haven’t seen any of this on my Z9F.

On the Netflix thing it seems to kick it into Standard when you go into the App. I'll go into Custom Pro 1 or 2. I decided to check and see what Netflix Calibration looked like. When I did and turned it off it didn't go back to Custom Pro, it just takes you right back into Standard.

But yes, so far I haven't seen it in content. It's not really freaking me out since I don't see it. What I'm concerned with again is it resetting my stuff again.

Right so when you go into Netflix PM and then turn it off, the set automatically goes into Standard. It's a bug that forces you to manually switch to the calibrated or any other perfered PM.

Oh ok. I assume they know. I wonder what other issues are I haven't seen yet. Should be glad I haven't ran into any others yet...except that day the tv decided to reset all the settings during a movie I was movie. I know I sound like a broken record with that one. Lol

I must have missed this but are you saying the TV reset all your settings including the calibration settings?

all the 20 point stuff is still there.

During watching a movie and messing with the Panasonic 820 (first time really messing with it), tv screen went black and when it came back the picture looked different. I looked and it went to Standard. I go back to Cinema Pro 2 I saw everything was different. Had to change, contrast, sharpness, colors, etc.

Then I went to Pro 1 and saw brightness up to 35 from 7. Then I realized I had to fix everything on that one too.

I finally played a Dolby Vision movie and saw that was screwed too. I don't know if Dolby Vision Dark setting is the same as Pro 1

Like I said the 20 point Calibration didn't get touched so I assume everything else that got messed with that wasn't main menu setting is fine. This happened the 2nd day I had it. Probably had it on a total 5 hours? I have not had it happen yet again

With a maximum HDR signal of 10,000 cd / mē, the Display Tone Mapping used by Sony perfectly follows the EOTF curve, perhaps even a bit too much, which can result in a clipping phenomenon from 85% of luminance . We measured the maximum brightness at 1,940 cd / mē, better than the 1,300 cd / mē of the Sony 65ZD9 , and even better than the 1,600 cd / mē of the Samsung 65Q9F . The Sony 65ZF9 is simply the brightest LCD TV in the lab today. This peak of very high brightness makes it possible to fully enjoy the HDR, even in daylight.
Only minor problem, the limited number of backlighting zones (one hundred against more than 700 on the ZD9) results in a blooming effectclearly visible around the light objects on a dark background. Subtitled VO film lovers will be the most affected by this phenomenon, which is even more visible in HDR around texts.
