I'm not as "turned on" by The Mummy as some people are. There's a level of DNR and other scan out anomolies that remind me of Forrest Gump and JP. Not reference material.

All one can say that you feel this way about such a brilliant UHD...

There's a LOT of old-school opticals cut into that flick as well as all the CG stuff, but when we get to the first generation material it smacks the SHIT out of JP and FG even when they're at their respective best on UHD.

I thought The Mummy looked fantastic for the most part, but yeah the opticals are a bit of a drawback. Forrest Gump has a similar issue in terms of the opticals and effects used. The Mummy Returns, however, is rather disappointing in 4K.

Gump definitely has a mildly 'processed' look throughout that then goes into overdrive on the opticals/VFX, though I didn't find it too objectionable TBH. Similar story for JP, slightly 'fussy' looking 1st gen material and opticals/VFX that have been HAMMERED with DNR. I'm less enamoured with that one.

But La Momie, the 1st gen stuff looks sensational IMO and even the copious opticals still don't look as overly fudged as they do on the two just mentioned. They just look like opticals. Mummy 2 isn't quite as high quality, granted, but it still murders the BD.

Oh those Mummy blu-rays are abysmal. I'll take the UHDs -- imperfections and all -- over those processed garbage transfers.

Greeting everyone.
After all the praise I've heard about the Dude's 4K, I was absolutely shocked at the picture (& audio which req'd big time boost), upon 1st view. Instead of stunning colours & other upgrades in various reviews I heard mentioned, I witnessed an absolute faded picture with dull colour. The detail was there but it was dark & almost foggy. It's like the brightness was repressed on my TV. This is the only 4K OR standard blu-ray that this has been an issue.

Now, my Sony TV has a picture adjustment called * Live Football mode* which brightens the screen considerably. When engaged, TBL 4K complete picture quality becomes absolutely STUNNING! (as described, I suspect, in the comments of others). The colours become SPECTACULAR & the detail that was always present, now expectedly become far more apparent. THIS, I'm sure, is the reference disc I've heard about. Not sure about the audio lacking volume though.

MY question is - why do I have modify the picture settings when everyone else seems to have the reference quality picture without an modification from their normal settings? Is a bad copy a possibility? What am I missing here? Thanks in advance for any & all insight. Be well.
B.

Hate to break it to ya, but most everyone on these nerd forums modifies the settings on their tv's/projectors to dial in the correct look for UHD - UHD streaming - 1080p Blu-ray - 1080p streaming - and crap resolution broadcast. That's right, I have 5 different settings for my tv based on the source and I would assume that many others here are like that.

Check out avsforum or something of that nature with your tv's model number and see if a fellow nerd has done settings adjustments that fit your liking. My Samsung 65ks8000 has about 4 or 5 dweebs that post their settings consistently.

Go nerds go!

Thanks for the 2 replies, guys.
I wasn't aware of how source material was handled by many of you. I can appreciate setting different for say 1080p vs 4K vs DVD vs streaming as example. I personally have never had to do that except with this specific disc. The TV or 4K player model shouldn't matter. It's the difference in THIS disc ONLY that is the issue here. And it's a significant difference from other 4K discs I own. I'm not talking about a tweak here & there. This is an unacceptable picture given the settings used for other 4K I have, & from what others have raved about.
I just thought it may be a bad copy. If what I'm experiencing is a common issue with this specific 4K disc I would suspect SOMEONE would have brought it up at some point considering how many consider it a reference disc. Mine is most certainly not - unless I boost the brightness big time. THAT in itself is what I consider a bummer, man.

This disc looks mighty fine. Movie is great as always too
I did find the audio levels to be extremely low. Most of the 4K titles I've seen, I've set the audio at around 24 on my LG C7; Big Lebowski needed about 54 before it was on about the same level.
Did anyone else experience low audio levels like me?

I've found that most dts:x soundtracks need a volume boost. Totally normal.

Ahh that might be it yes It played the 7.1 HD-MA core. I do think it was my first play of a DTS:X disc, so that would be why it was the first encounter. I'll try with Black Hawk Down and compare

Black Hawk Down (4K) you won't have to raise the volume, it's perfect.

I bought this a few days ago and it looks amazing to me. Of course having to suffer through the BD all these years it might just be a placebo effect. I also noticed that I had to crank the volume up. I also forgot to turn the volume back down when I put on Iron Maiden's Number Of The Beast album. Man, was that bracing.

Black Hawk Down doesn’t have great LFE. Could be much better.

Next Tuesday get this on 4K ... 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi
It should have all the bass (LFE) of your deepest desire...Atomas.

The Big Lebowski 4K is a comedy that needs volume raise.
The picture beats the standard Blu. ...And one of the best films from The Coen Brothers.
All their films are great...they don't make inferior films.
