I think most product managers in the Dutch home video industry aren't passionate or knowledgeable about product that they're selling and this attitude is reflected in the end product. They don't care about the quality as long as their targets are met. That's why I usually stay away from Dutch releases.

I was once told by someone from a Dutch film distributor that their QC process is mostly automated. The only thing that they check manually are chapter stops and locked subtitles if the licensor requested them.

Not perfect, but a major improvement.

I'm curious if Toei's BD will have better compression. I mean, the audio's better (LPCM 5.1 24-bit and the original Japanese version of "Blizzard") so I'm hoping it's a clear victory for them.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly - Toei

Now that MakeMKV has updated I'm able to get as much information as possible. I took the same screencaps as I did on the Funimation Blu-ray, but it took some adjusting since the framerate on each is slightly different. Most noticeable difference is of course the lack of green tint, but some dark areas look a lot better as well.

Image 7 is all you need to look at to see the green tint (someone make it a half and half image),also someone please put that up from the UK disc. How does that happen, isn't correct color one of the basic things you check when authoring a disc?

Well, sure, but FUNi used a source given to them at 24p (as compared to the UK and JP BDs at 23.97p), most likely a theatrical DCP. I cannot remember if the green tint was in the screening I saw, but the frame rate alone says a different source was used- not FUNi messing with the colours.

That said, they should have checked with other sources to see what was the highest quality and spot the tint- it’s on them they never noticed or didn’t care.

A DCP in P3 color space usually has a greenish tint, but the average viewer's eyes will filter the tint out due to chromatic adaptation. It also helps that the cinema screen is surrounded by nothing but darkness. Whether the green tint on the Blu-ray is caused by a botched conversion from P3 to Rec.709 or not, I dunno.

Framerate doesn't necessarily mean a different source was used. Shouldn't be difficult to change the framerate from 24 to 23.976 and vice versa.

Dragon Ball Super's English dub run has been at the center of a strange controversy lately as the last few episodes to have premiered on Toonami have suffered a noticeable dip in visual fidelity. After fans questioned Adult Swim about why some of the scenes had a notable framerate dip, Toonami's executives quickly responded and have now explained what was really going on.

SVP and Creative Director of Adult Swim, and Toonami co-creator, Jason DeMarco responded to the fan inquiries on Twitter and not only gave fans a detailed explanation of the issue, but also gives fans hope that the issue will be fixed going forward.

#toonami and #DragonBallSuper fans, an update on last week’s slowdown of action scenes. Here goes: SO. Remember the Pokémon flashing episode that triggered a bunch of epileptic episodes in viewers? Since then, TV networks have something called the “Harding Test.”

As DeMarco explains that the framerate issue stems from the Harding Test, which tests television series for photosensitive epilepsy provocative images. The last few episodes of the series have failed that test, "Every show, commercial, etc is run through this test to make sure it doesn’t have flashing frames that could trigger folks with epilepsy. The last few eps of DBS have had fight scenes that are cut to about one frame per edit in some places- they evidently fail the Harding Test."

As DeMarco elaborates, the standard fixes for this test didn't make a big splash on the radar, "Our program edit folks, who do these tests, normally just slow the cuts down in these scenes to about four frames per second. In the case of these DBS eps, it made the fight scenes look insanely slow. Program edit does this routinely, so they didn’t even think to notify us."

For fans hoping for a fix, DeMarco does state that these fixes have been adjusted and look much better in comparison, "...we asked program edit if there was any way they could slow these scenes down LESS. So from now on, they will he slowed (if they fail the test) to two frames a second, down from one. We tested it and it looks WAY better."

DeMarco notes that these fixes will kick in beginning with the next episode premiere of the series, so hopefully is works out for everyone. Though these broadcast fixes are usually done all the time (Japan notably dims the screen when bright lights are on the screen), this was the first notable adjustment. But Toonami, like always, listens to the fans and has already made major strides to address the issue.

Dragon Ball Super currently airs its English dub on Adult Swim during the Toonami programming block on Saturday evenings. It is also available to stream on Funimation and Amazon Video. The Japanese-language release of the series is complete, and available to stream on FunimationNOW and Crunchyroll. The manga has chapters that can currently be read for free thanks to Viz Media, and Dragon Ball Super's big movie, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.

Now that I have access to a PC, I've been able to look at the UK and JP screencaps of the Broly film on a decent monitor. Upon comparing them, they look nearly identical, with an ever so slight edge to Toei in some shots. Outside of the audio being more robust on Toei's BD (and having Blizzard in Japanese) and the credits having Japanese text, the two releases are very comparable.

That said, there’s more artifacts in all the BDs than I’d like. The Dutch release is obviously the worst, with FUNi’s being better due to proper gamma and a higher bitrate, but still of a poor quality. Then Manga UK’s BD, which is lower than FUNi’s and Toei’s in terms of video bitrate looks nearly identical to Toei’s encode, but seeing the often extreme banding on both makes me think it’s a source issue. Oh well...

After watching the movie on the Japanese BD, I'm pretty confident it was green when I saw it in theaters. The colors looked significantly better than I remember seeing them before.
