The first cut was pulled from theaters after a week or two and has never been allowed to be released any further. The second cut played in the US theaters, and has been the only cut available in the US on television and home video. The third cut is the shorter, international cut, and (I think) has been the only cut available in those markets up until now. So if Kubrick had a strong preference for either cut, why would he allow his not-preferred cut to be available to millions of viewers? He definitely blocked future releases of the cut we know that he liked the least. I'm not saying it's impossible that he would deliberately force some countries to watch a cut he considered inferior, but it doesn't make much sense to me that he would. What makes sense to me is that the two cuts had some different creative goals, and that he felt that both cuts met those goals to a degree which satisfied him. |

So after a little digging, I found out the 1997 series did receive a re-release last October, but it was DVD only. So I have to assume either HD masters don't exist or they can't be bothered to remaster it. The IT mini series was released in 1990 and received a HD master, though that might be because it's more critically acclaimed than Shining's mini series. Regardless, I might just purchase the 2018 release and keep that until a Blu-ray releases.
Edit: I stand corrected. An HD version of this series does exist and was aired on TWC a few years back, now known as Spectrum. So armed with that new information, I'm left to assume no Blu-ray version was produced because of the general reception it received. Guess we can mark this down under HD content that will forever be constrained to DVDs. Last edited by battlechateau; 09-17-2019 at 12:46 PM. |

It may be a little bit closer to the book and was actually partially filmed at The Stanley Hotel (the inspiration for the Overlook), but that TV version was lousy. The effects were laughable. The only thing good about it was Rebecca De Mornay, and that was mainly because of she and her night attire. ![]() Kubrick took King's novel and visually made it a masterpiece. I think King is mostly jealous, mostly. |

I wouldn't go that far, but it had two huge problems. The actor playing Danny wasn't good, and there was no justification (other than money, of course) for stretching it out over three nights. The pacing is terrible, and often repetitive. This would have benefited greatly from being a two-night event rather than three.

I've noticed that caps-a-holic put up caps of the remastered 1080p blu ray. Here's the comparison against the old blu ray:

On the HD front, I lean toward the original blu. In comparison, the re-mastered almost looks flat to a fault, and I suspect HDR to SDR complications on the order of what affected the Mi4k re-release of 2001. Still, I may future-proof and snag it in a sale someday, see how it looks in motion. |

I feel like everything looks slightly out of focus and/or very soft on the new disc. Maybe it's just that the old one was over-sharpened, overly contrasty or whatever, but in the freezer comparison, most of the text on the cans just look a little blurry. I do like the warmer look of it, though I don't know if that's accurate.
