I've learnt to arrive around 20mins after listed start time as 10mins are usually ad's, then 10-15mins trailers (I dont mind trailers)

reserved seating helps this massively
the flip side though: I've been to some sneak previews at AMC where they have almost dispensed with the trailers entirely. Folk were wandering into 'Alita: Battle Angel' fifteen minutes after the film actually began because there were NO trailers - (whoops)

honestly i can agree with this 100%, since moving to Houston from LA, the theaters out here are awful. Especially the AMC in downtown. I much prefer to watch movies on my OLED in the comfort of my own home

I rarely go to a movie theater and think the volume is anywhere near as loud as I want in a big theater. Hell, I think 65% of the time, the surround sound speakers aren't even used. Nothing makes a movie watching worse than the lone, behind the screen speaker, going for a movie.

Most commercial theaters can't afford to update their audio and video equipment because, they're making enough money, so they continue to use what they have, and make due. Theaters don't make as much money as people think they do, which is why they charge triple prices at the concession stands. Moviegoers spend more money buying junk food, than what they've paid to see the movie. That's where they make the majority of their money, not from the movies! If it wasn't for the concession stands, theaters wouldn't be able to sustain their business.

I personally never had much issues with the cinemas/theaters I frequent. Though there was one time last year, I went to see Venom and on my first screening, the screen couldn't expand as it was broken on the sides, the staff were kind enough to come out and inform us of this though. So the screen size had to remain small for the film that one time. After that I never encountered that problem again on my other screenings since they were in different screen rooms.

the new Cinepolis in Gaithersburg Maryland (which used to be the Kentlands Paragon theaters) seems to concentrate on: "... features fully reclining leather seats, in-theater waiting service, gourmet food and a selection of alcoholic drinks" - I inquired what "state of the art cinema presentation" meant and I got no response, I get the sense throwing a 2K projected image and 5.1 sound is more than enough, folk don't care, therefore theaters give the bare minimum. IPic Bethesda is the same thing - the premium plus seats are close to thirty bucks (!!) that's insane

Marcus owns the two theaters in my city. They replaced all of the seats at one theater to the recliners, but spent no money on the actual screens nor equipment in anything but their premium theaters. The screens in the side theaters barely look larger than my home television and they don't project in 4K/HDR. Even our premium theaters don't do 4K/HDR... but the seats vibrate if there's bass.

I dislike the theater mostly due to the people who go to movies. People on cell phones with their screens on MAXIMUM BRIGHTNESS, people who bring their infants or toddlers and then don't take them out if they cry, people who talk incessently... I could go on.

All the AMCs around me are pretty terrible. Volume not loud .. dirty. I have A-list but go to a new Cinemark that opened up because it is super clean and has XD (there version of fake imax). All the other theatres besides the XD one aren't so great either.

Ever since I made my own home theatre I go less and less besides from seeing a big release. Cant wait until I have room for a large screen and projector .. then I will probably never go anymore.

Also I tend to only go to morning / early afternoon showings cuz I hate being in a crowded theatre. People are constantly talking / checking their phone .. I really wish there was a Drafthouse close by.

in this day and age, installing a 7.1 surround system is extremely affordable and doable for cinema chains. Here in the DC/MD/VA area, all the auditoriums at the Arclight, Angelika Mosaic and AFI feature this. The manager at AMC Mazza stated all the auditoriums were to be upgraded, but that has yet to occur. Regal are the worst and come across as cheap bastards, in my opinion ALL the RPX screens should feature Dolby Atmos or DTS-X, they only implement 7.1 for both the RPX and 4XD screens.

Agree with Norton. The lack of Imax and Dolby theaters in my area is disappointing..

IMAX-laser, Dolby Cinema and 70mm may be the best in cinema going experience - but really any theater can, and should, buy a top of the line 4K laser projector and install a Dolby Atmos system, and you're gold.

While I agree with him on the sorry state of many theaters, I don't think the majority of moviegoers even notice the difference or care. Of course it will matter a lot more to enthusiasts on a board like this but I know so many people that think dvds look just as good as blurays.

This is sadly true.

Norton is also wrong.

Running under luminosity is distroying everyting, give me a break. This doens't factor in a multitue of factors such as screen size, ambient light, distance to the screen, etc....none of which are standardized.

While I agree that theatres are not setup in optimal quality....nor is the average home TV setup which he is suggesting needs to be diferentiated from.

Put out quality films and people will pay even with a non-perfect presentation.

Outside of the size difference, the quality of OLED is better than what I'd reasonably expect in a film presentation based on a multi-gen copy that a theatre is likley getting.

I don't think its theaters or streaming that's killing movies. It's the fact that while the studios have hooked people with the various superhero films, sequels and reboots/remakes, they don't bother to put that much effort in original films.

Or rather, make an original film that a person wants to watch. Go out of the box. Okay, so you want to make an original movie that's derivative, fine, just make the hook/twist so out of left field that it will engage interest.
