I was thinking the same thing. I'm still not seeing any evidence of any missing key frames.

Would like to check the interlacing/frame cadence for myself but I don't know when that particular shot happens.

Im not sure how you can even tell that unless you have the DVD in hand? Also animation doesnt work like that especially for such a straightforward cut you wouldnt see much variation in timing

Heres all 20 frames of the cut from the DVD, opened in aegisub:

So the same then. The one thing I did notice now when I took a closer look at it, and you can see this in those shots as well, is that it looks like the BD might have an issue with some kind of chroma ghosting. The combination of chroma subsampling and interlacing can be a real problem, and while the luma IVTCs perfectly here I could not get the chroma to match, there's a slight ghosting or combing left over in the chroma on the reconstructed frames. I don't know if there is some way to reconstruct it properly or if it's broken beyond repair in the source.

Yeah those 20 frames are identical (as far as I can tell), what's missing?

The BD master has problems with chroma

On both series, there's some chroma problems due to the way it was upscaled by japanese.

Yep, that's exactly it. I didn't do any lower-level analysis, if it would perhaps be possible to IVTC the chroma separately in its subsampled state or something, but just from the chroma upsampled output I got through madVR it was already too late, as the chroma fields contained information combined from different frames.

I'm pretty sure now that PurpleGeth checked a crappy re-encode. I've checked two IVTC'd re-encodes that have a similar broken frame distribution.

KR BD on the left is 1-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 (correct)
Re-encode on the right is 2-2-2-1-3-1-3-1-3-2-1 (wrong)

The source he got is the correct one, since it's from me, I ripped a whole BD with MAkeMKV (just ripped the one big files episodes, I did not make a copy of the disc)
So unless makeMKV f*ck-up the video file in the processing it's not a source problem.
Another guy did the IVTC tho, maybe it's from there.

Here's what happened:

Geth noticed the encodes were broken, so curious about the source, the raws were ripped and passed off to an industry friend along with the examples seen on Twitter since video technicalities aren't his thing.

Turns out, either because of laziness or misunderstanding what was being asked, Mr Industry didn't download the remuxes to actually do any IVTCing himself to actually check. He just looked at the examples of the broken encodes and decided the BD was broken, and that's what Geth reported.

The folks who actually do know about video just figured they were correct since the aforementioned is typically reliable, and thus the misunderstanding got reported with certainty without being checked by multiple people.

I thought I was going insane as I couldn't replicate the example with Saitou that Geth replied to me with. Like there had to be something I was missing. Glad that's over.

At least now I finally backed-up all the GitS Bandai/Manga DVD ISO's to my media server because of this and now I'm almost done with the Korean Blu-ray's.

It burns me that the issues with these still aren't fixed. Anime on blu-ray is so hit or miss.

I've been in the process of moving my region B blu-rays over to region A where I can, as I'm no longer in a financial space where I really need to go the cheaper route (looking at you, AoA). But GitS is a more difficult situation. The American blu-rays are garbage, and we all know that. I have the Region B box set, which I'm quite pleased with. But I'm curious if there is a region A release that matches their sub/dub options? There are so many releases and so much discussion around them, that it's hard to search for a concise and comprehensive answer.

Does such a thing exist in any of the myriad box sets and versions released in Japan, South Korea, etc? I'd want English dub and English Sub (w/ Japanese audio), as I enjoy both for this series, and wouldn't want to give either up.

The Korean sets of Ghost in the Shell were the best as the video quality matched the Japanese release and it included both the dub and proper subs too. Unfortunately it is long out of print and difficult to find outside of eBay but they are the best and are region free. After that I don't know of any release worth getting as I haven't really looked as I am happy with the Korean sets.

Could you link to the database entry for those exact sets? I just want to make sure that I'm looking at the right ones. Thanks!

There is no database entry here and no point to add one as they are OOP. Here are the sets I am referring to though:

Thanks for the info. Holy crap, though, those are so damn big! I think I'll stick with my reasonably sized region B set for now haha.
