Wow! It looks even better than I thought it would. Why can't the other GKIDS SteelBooks look that good?
I've already ordered it from Amazon.ca, but it's not currently in-stock, so it won't arrive for a week or two.

I have a question though, does the Lupin SteelBook have a glossy or matte finish?

Went for the Discotek BD with the Manga UK dub because Manga UK didn't include their own dub with the UK BD lol

I picked up both the Manga UK box set with both series in it and also the individual US releases - I think I may just replace the UK discs in the box set with the US ones.

I just got a pre-authorization my CC for combining multiple orders of in-stock items today. They hadn't been doing this with my last few orders, so it is good to see. I hope yours is on its way soon.

Every now and then you can find OOP Funimation LE box sets on Amazon. More often than not, they’ll be through third party sellers, but it’s how I managed to cop both My Hero Academia: Season 3 and Star Blazers 2199 LE boxes long after they were thought to be sold out.

Last Summer almost every OOP Funimation LE went up on Amazon for like $20-$30. It happens.

Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise/Oritsu Uchugun: Oneamisu no Tsubasa Memorial Box
(Laserdisc, Bandai Visual, 1990)

Since most people here never had Laserdiscs, nor Japanese collector's editions at that, I figured I'd go SUPER in-depth on the most recent LD pickup of mine. Normally I don't take a lot of images of my hauls, but since this is a very important release, you'll see why I did.

So, this is the 1990 CAV Memorial Box set for Wings of Honnêamise. This Japanese Laserdisc release was released on 22 November, 1990 at a price of ¥14800. It includes:
-The film on full CAV format (CAV allows for perfect frame-by-frame playback that no other format since Laserdisc can even replicate perfectly. CAV is 30 minutes per side of a disc, while CLV is 60 minutes per side. Unless doing freeze frames, the difference between CAV and CLV is minimal, but for those who want the best LD experience, CAV pressings are optimal)
-The Pilot film in CAV format
-A deleted scene in CAV format
-The full soundtrack of the film set to concept images* (more on that later)
-2 huge booklets

The first booklet is a small manga, actually. I'm sure somebody has made scans of it at some point, but here's a small sample.

The second booklet is the real deal- something akin to what Criterion and Arrow do for their Blu-rays, featuring a combination of artwork, storyboards, interviews and cast/crew listings. If you know Japanese, it is a damn good read.

Here is Disc 1 (full CAV), which features the pilot film, the deleted scene, and the first 50 or so minutes of the film. Remember that while CAV is 30 minutes per side at most for NTSC, you can't just fit 1 hour on the disc as a whole, you have to find a good scene to end each side with, and the disc change as well. As such, it's rare to see a CAV disc with 29 minutes and 50+ seconds on it, or a CLV disc with 59 minutes and 50+ seconds on its side.

While we're here just look at that beautiful artwork. While I've made it clear that I hate Digipaks because of how they're constructed, and that I don't really like elaborate collector's editions, with Laserdisc, it's kind of essential, as it is a format limitation, so any film over 2 hours would need to be on 2 discs minimum. Even the most basic studio releases have great artwork that is often framable due to the size.

Disc 2. On it is just the film on both sides in full CAV.

Disc 3. Side 1 is CAV and features the ending to the movie, along with some of the music from the film set to concept artwork. Side 2 is CLV and features the rest of the soundtrack and concept art.

So, why is this Laserdisc historically significant? The soundtrack. About 1 hour and 16 minutes of music were made for the movie, but only 38 minutes of it were ever put on the movie's OSTs. The movie has a 1991 "complete" release, but all it has is the 38-min OST + the movie's whole audio track on two CDs. The OST hasn't been re-issued on any format since 1991... enter this Laserdisc. The movie's full 1 hour & 16 minute score was included as a bonus, but only on the Laserdisc itself. Since then, there has been no other re-issue of the soundtrack on CD, Vinyl, digital or anything.

There is also a 1998 Laserdisc release, featuring a newer transfer, and a Dolby Digital 5.1 remix. I went with the 1990 release, as I got it for cheap, and it carries the original Dolby Stereo theatrical mix in PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround (the same thing). The '98 LD does have a Dolby Surround track, but I have no clue if it is this original mix, or a downmix of the 5.1 remix (which itself isn't very good, IIRC).

As for the movie itself, it's a classic one scene short of a masterpiece (anyone who has seen the film will know what I mean- that scene really has no reason to be there). All NA BDs are OOP now, and Maiden Japan's releases only have the Japanese 5.1 mix which is a real shame, but if anyone can pick up the film on any format, you'll most likely enjoy it. It really is a film that could never be made in this current decade and century- the production values are astronomical and put almost all modern anime films to shame with the level of detail in its artwork and fluidity of its animation.

Sorry it's long for a "haul" post, but where else would I post it?

^^ Good Post PW.

I got into laserdiscs in the early '90s and have about 100.

I gotta agree, some of the CAV sets have incredible artwork and extras and many came boxed.
Though I don't have any anime on LD, some of my fave CAV spec eds include;

- Aliens
- Cleopatra
- Ben-Hur
- Spartacus
- Jason & The Argonauts
a few others...

Hmm... I'm not sure, but I think here was also full OST:

https://www.discogs.com/Ryuichi-Saka...elease/3475001

But it's still a 1991 edition (never re-issued). Personally, I recommend it:

https://www.discogs.com/Ryuichi-Saka...lease/15711658

Nice artifact after all. The LDs are beautiful, but they take up a lot of space, so even if they came back, I wouldn't buy them (laughs). A friend has a LotGH box on LD that he bought for some ridiculous amount 3 years ago. Also nice

I’m not disagreeing (I’m saying the last release was that 1991 CD).

I do intend to get all of LOTGH on LD, as I hate the re-animated stuff with a passion, but while the cost of the box sets isn’t too bad, the international shipping would kill any sort of deal.

Just a few pickups from the last month

Just in today, the Collectors edition of Weathering With You,
thankfully all in good condition.

Also got in The Promised Neverland. Finally got around to ordering that in.

I got in Dr. Stone last month but never got around to posting it.
Looks great, but had the same issue as other people though with the
box being bowed because of the key chains they crammed in there.

Some preorders from RightStuf arrived today. I'm really excited about Lupin III: the 1st which should be arriving any day now and I'm very interested to see The Castle of Cagliostro in 4K.

Damn, you're lucky- my Cagliostro is in USPS hell in the Detroit hub. I've already written most of my technical review on it (2000+ words so far), but need to have the disc to finish. Any day now...

My Caliostro has not even shipped yet . In one way I’m relieved since it means it won’t get stuck in Philly right now . 7 boxes from Rightstuf and 1 from eBay stuck for a week to a month now . The eBay one tried to file a missing mail and the missing mail form won’t work .

Arrived since last post :

Convention bag or let’s use this to get rid of these Aniplex releases we only have part of now ? :

One of my only 2 orders from the holiday sales arrived. The other order still hasn't shipped from RS yet.

I got the Hayao collection for really cheap, but the film strip was damaged, so I have to live with it.
