All they would've had to do to open up more options for IX would be for Luke to not disappear at the end of VIII. I'd hardly consider that tarnishing Fisher's legacy, and it would have been a trivial change to VIII.

I heard Johnson say he almost didn’t have Luke die at the end. Or he at least considered it. I can’t remember if that was in the commentary, the documentary, or some podcast.

I was replying to someone who thinks VIII should have been reworked to portray Leia dying in Episode VIII for some reason.And going back and reshooting the film to have Luke live instead, somehow, for some reason.

Glad he did. Lukes death scene is one of the few good and well-handled things that happen in Last Jedi. Its too bad they had to drudge his ghost back up for some "clean up" duty in Rise.

Some people will want to follow the loudest voices. If they read enough articles or watch enough videos they will change their minds. They just want to follow who/what they think is the alpha. Plenty of evidence of this over the last four year or so.

Yeah that was great. But I prefer the way Chewie knows exactly what he's doing compared to Rey barely being in control. Plus it didn't have that music.

Dave Filoni talked about that and you're right on the money. Leia was meant to have the Obi-Wan mentor role, but also be the key to redeeming Ben. They felt they couldn't have Ben kill his father and have him be redeemed, unless it was the mother figure who washed away the sins of the son. That's why in every version of the script we've seen for TROS, Leia always was the one to reach out to Ben using the Force to bring him back. The scene we get in TROS is pretty much exactly what was in Colin's script from before Carrie passed away.

And from what has been talked about in George's outlines for his ST, we had a similar dynamic where the focus of this trilogy would have been on the new lead character AND Leia. Luke would have saved the galaxy in the OT but he wasn't going to be able to stave off evil for good. Leia was the one who would ultimately save the galaxy once and for all and Lucas planned on revealing her as the Chosen One. That may also be why in the new canon, it's been confirmed that Yoda wanted to train Leia, not Luke.

TROS in its own way does try to fulfill this by having Rey fulfill Leia's legacy. It makes sense to me that the mother figure would ultimately save the galaxy by healing it and restoring it with love, granting her the ability to do what Vader and even Luke couldn't. Even Padme for that matter died in spite of her children, whereas Leia died to save her child(ren if we include Rey as a surrogate daughter).

Is your issue with the fact that his ghost came back at all? Because that was pretty much always a given. And Trevorrow, who didn't want Luke to die and tried to get Kathleen and Rian to keep him alive at the end of TLJ, basically gave ghost Luke a really big role in IX as if he was still alive, I guess to circumvent Kathleen.

Which wouldn't have bothered me so much if not for the fact that his Luke seemed very OOC in comparison to TLJ Luke. TLJ Luke was all about how the PT Jedi were flawed and needed to be changed, yet in Trevorrow's IX, Luke is constantly scolding Rey and complaining about the fact that she keeps breaking Jedi traditions and isn't following the dogma.

There are tweets from people and YouTubers who praised TLJ immediately after they watched it, only to a few days later suddenly claim they've hated the movie all along and what an atrocity it is because they realized they'll make more money from hating it.

Interestingly enough, Anthony Daniels also said in his book last year that he started watching some critical videos of the ST online and they started to turn him against the movies too before he snapped out of it and realized the negative effects from listening to propaganda like that.

I hated the return of Palpatine, yes. But as a ghost it would have been a lot more acceptable than a physical return. That killed Rise for me along with the cheesey Reylo garbage. It undoes what Anakin did at the end of ROTJ which doesn’t sit well with a lot of people. I wanted Kylo to stay bad and he and Rey to accept that balance means good and evil must exist. When I first heard Palpatines laugh during the TROS trailer I was excited because I thought he was going to just be a ghost or a subliminal influence on Kylo, maybe Rey, etc. Instead we get the old "nah he’s not dead" BS. Popped that balloon for me big time.

Was it really the plan to bring back Palpatine though the whole time? I find that hard to believe. Seemed like a mad scramble to UNpiss off the fan base. I actually warmed up to the TLJ Luke since he did have reasons to be rather grumpy. The Jedi lore was littered with failure. I can understand his frustrations. But you don’t solve them by ditching everything and abandoning your close loved ones. Granted, he did come back at the end of TLJ and that scene along with his death remain fantastic.

I am glad that Luke passed at the end of TLJ. It was good timing and made sense. Him being the main character or close to it in TROS wouldn’t have worked, IMO.
