Count me in as another who wasn't aware of those two during their initial availability and would be eager to obtain them!
There's not one of these cartoon special sets that isn't a valuable resource for the serious classic animation buff, scholar, or film historian... |

One of the coolest things about seeing an original 35mm print scanned is how much you *don't* see in the final projected print. Examples below (From an original release 35mm Technicolor IB print of Robin Hood:

This is in the weeds in technical stuff a little today:
I'm really happy with how scans have been coming out. Great across the board. I wish I didn't have to teach right now; I'd be there again doing a lot more scans. I'm hoping within the coming weeks to get the next batch there. Right now I only have preview files in my hands of most of what we did last Thursday and hope to have all files in my hands by the end of the week. We do have the 4ks final files on a few of the nitrate Flip the Frogs we just scanned. Becca (who has started to get pretty good at digital restoration) cleaned up the second element on 'The Cuckoo Murder Case' between Sunday and yesterday, and it's absolutely stunning. It was scanned from MGM's master positive- and has a Movie Tone aspect ratio (cutting off part of the full frame aperture the film was shot with). I was only going to use this element for the titles of the film originally since they are missing on the only extant full frame print. That print is scanned and nicely cleaned up (and has been done about a year). This master positive is so much nicer in visual quality though, so I'm going to work on combining the small missing piece from where the soundtrack sits from the full-frame print. We may also rescan that full frame print to see if there's any ability to boost the quality, but I' pretty sure its already as good as it can be. Devon Baxter is going to work on 'Jailbirds'. We had it scanned already, but the new scanner does even better in terms of dirt, base and emulsion. It's incredibly clean in the new 4k scan and stunning. With a little cleanup it will really sparkle, as a good majority of the Flip set does. Looking through all the elements just makes me smile at this point. Each one of these projects is climbing a mountain... and chances are no one will climb those same mountains anytime soon, so it's important to get them as right as we can I think.. I bit the bullet yesterday and ordered the soundtrack scan on 'Parrotville Old Folks' from the b/w 35mm element at LOC. I know I won't regret it in the bigger picture. I'm working on little tweaks to the master otherwise and have my first authoring done on the set right now, and we're working on the package. The first cover design will be used for the booklet currently. I like it but have been thinking about something different for the cover. I feel like, as a company, we need to get all these things moving even quicker to prepare for the next stages of growth. You're all helping with that immensely... and I can see Thunderbean being able to tackle the next projects starting this year. Last edited by Steve Stanchfield; 03-17-2021 at 03:21 PM. |

Continuing on some of those same thoughts on seeing more than would normally would. The film 'Who Framed Roger Rabbitt' is hard matted on the effects shots, but in both live action and animation it isn't otherwise. Here's some cool examples from the first reel of the film. Note also the color design/ contrast on the original release of the film:

Steve, since you stated you've scanned some of the source materials at 4K, does that mean you'll be releasing some stuff in the 4K format?

Last week I received the 1937 feature, but I was unable to watch it until just moments ago. I have to say you found quite a print! The clarity and colors were nothing short of exceptional.
I was surprised at a couple of scenes. When the princess first goes upstairs in the little cottage, the names of the little men carved on the footboards are in German(!). She reads them in English, though, so it's very clear whose bed she's looking at. The other scene shows the naughty queen in her lair choosing one book from amongst many on a shelf. All the titles are in German, so it's a little puzzling at first what she's up to. When she opens the book and places it on a desk, it show's she's found a formula for a Peddler's Disguise in English. I take it the two German segments replaced two damaged segments from the English print, right? Those German segments looked just as good as the rest of the English print, so they matched up very nicely without any jarring change in quality nor color and sharpness. Great work, Steve! btw I had to laugh when I saw the names "Chef" and "Pimpel"! One last thing.... I was looking at some of the descriptions for the special sets, and I saw this: "This special set (BDR) is scanned from a rare, original IB Technicolor print, looking as it should. It's presented full frame without any additional scrubbing or changes. This special set also comes with an update to special set 18, featuring better footage at the beginning of reel 3."Did I accidentally combine those two sentences from different sets, or was that update supposed to be included with the 1937 feature? Update: From post #5932: "1937, 1950 and More Stop Motion Marvels are all going out right now. I had hoped to have the update for 1940 sent as well, but that will be coming as soon as the scans are done. I almost went today..." Last edited by Toar; 03-19-2021 at 04:02 PM. |

Steve, I still haven't received 1937, not sure if anyone is still waiting. I've sent a PM with my address in case I just got passed over on this one. Thanks

Mine (purchased through the Thunderbean Shop) arrived several days back, along with my pre-orders of the 1950 feature and "More Stop Motion Marvels". I highly recommend using the Thunderbean Shop's ticket system (which does apply to old orders made directly via PayPal as well), handled by Steve's close collaborator David Grauman, rather than trying to deal with Steve directly. Take it from me: I've had my share of experience with the latter over the years, and the new system—with someone who actually seems pretty reliable at responding to tickets and getting replacements sent where needed, and tracking numbers supplied both for new orders and ticket-related replacement packages—is showing itself to be a very welcome improvement.
