Yup, at the very beginning. He recorded a little intro for the later Criterion DVD addressing this

The Silent Night Deadly Night commentary talks about the gore inserts looking terrible and the commentary for Blue Ice talks about the DVD/VHS quality of the film the participants were watching and a promise to send them the remastered version.

I wonder if anyone ever had to do a commentary with a script only or maybe over the phone listening to the film?

But the snafu with Henry’s BD is more troubling, that was 100% within their control and even the most cursory QC check would’ve spotted it.

The trouble is, QC these days isn’t about watching something, it’s limited to just checking if the disc physically plays and is authored correctly, no matter if the actual master itself is faulty. We saw this with StudioCanal when they arsed up The Fog UHD, it played okay ergo there was nothing wrong with it.
What was wrong with the Fog UHD and did they fix it?

The Fog from Studiocanal has a poor encode that's very blocky and has some flickering issues. The 2.0 audio is also in the wrong pitch (and possibly the 5.1 too iirc). No correction for either issue, though I have never seen a bad encode replaced because in a studios view it's not really a true 'error' with the disc, same thing for Shout's Halloween 2 with its rough encode. Audio in the wrong pitch isn't something I've seen a studio attempt to fix either, Lionsgate's release of The Evil Dead has the audio pitched down too and that disc is unchanged since release.

Encode yes, HDR10 layer in particular. Their other Carpenter releases have similarly dodgy encodes. They're far from unwatchable in DV, it's just an encode like that merely has no place on a premium physical format.

The flickering though - I don't think there's agreement on what that is. I think it may be a conflation of issues from both the lighting of the original filming and the encode/HDR pass.

Yup, the DV cleans up the encodes mostly - same as the Shout Halloweens. There shouldn't be any massive difference between HDR10 and DV anyways but it is what it is. Thankfully both Studiocanal and Shout have shown improvement on their encodes since then.

I don't think the flickering is due to the film, but as Shout is set to release their own version of The Fog we'll probably find out then. Either way I can't imagine the Shout release could be any worse than what Studiocanal gave us.

Does anyone know approximately when the corrected discs will be available? In other words, how quickly does Arrow solve these problems? I'd like to buy this 4K UHD, but it looks like I'll have to wait. The question is how long.

It's different per film. In this case it's a problem with the master, and those who put it together have to fix it to pass onto Arrow.

If the problem in question were fixable by them then they'd do it and we'd probably have a date already.

In case of interest, whilst we wait for updated discs, here's a BDInfo scan of the current one for anyone interested! (Apologies if already posted - I couldn't see it at a quick glance.)

I still don't understand what is the best option. Should I get the botched copy and wait for the disc replacements? Or wait until a fixed version comes out? And if I wait, will they have the limited edition "fixed version"?

It's not guaranteed we get a fix either.

If you wait, you may miss out on the LE entirely.

If you're concerned about the limited edition's availability, I would get the botched copy and wait for the replacements. I highly doubt you'll see either limited or regular editions with corrected discs included in them anytime soon.

AVforums says this about the repeated shot in their review:

"Whilst this cut was present on the recent French and Swedish blu-ray release, it wasn’t on other older versions. Is this a ‘mistake’ by Arrow? A cut/edit made by McNaughton post release?".

This was mentioned in another forum:

"At least two users have reported that their Carlotta edition also has the unrelated shot of the woman leaving her car dropped into the Henry/Becky conversation while the audio of their conversation continues to play over that shot...a Facebook user says the Scandinavian BD of Henry also has the earlier shot reappearing). However, the Dark Sky Blu-Ray from a few years ago does not have the editing error but it is also from a 4k scan, and the Dark Sky and Arrow booklets say the scan was approved by John McNaughton."

So then this was on other versions of the film, before this UHD? Could it have indeed been some odd alternate cut that wasn't supposed to make it to the theatre? I don't see how this exact mistake could have been made on other releases too if it's supposedly a mistake on this new UHD exclusively.

This is what's so odd about this. It sounds like it must have been present like this in the negative somehow, or introduced in the scan somehow, and the French, Swedish and now Arrow releases have all used that same scan.

This has already been discussed in this thread, mar3o (along with some correlations made in the 12 MONKEYS thread, which features its own error of this very same ilk).

Huzzah! Thanks, Arrow. That's a pretty quick turnaround and fortunately I ordered direct so have little to do.
