Candyman (2021)

A decent movie with an underdeveloped third act. Still, this sequel/reboot is much better than the two follow-ups before it.

I loaned this BD from a mate of mine since I have been too undertain of it to buy it myself. Here are some reflections (a summarized review).

I am a big fan of disaster movies in general (some of my favourites are 'Twister', 'Armageddon' and 'The Day After Tomorrow') and am on board with most things in sci fi, fantasy etc. That being said, there are limits for me too and sometimes things just get too silly. When I read of the scenario behind this new movie I admit I feared it might be too silly, too OTT, but I wanted to give it a chance.

Now that I have seen it, what do I think? Well, it is neither as good as it could have been as I see it nor as bad as I feared it might be. Thus a score of 3 stars out of 5.

The scenario is certainly 'out there' and not very believable but it kinda functions as what it is: an entertaining piece of 'popcorn movie' where you don't have to think much and just sit back and enjoy the special effects and sound which both are top notch (a special mention to the all-encompassing audio which was awesome on my 11.4 Soundbar system). The acting is fine without being great and the humour is ok. The scenario is certainly 'creative' but one needs to accept it for what it is to enjoy the movie.

It's not up there with the best films in the genre as I see it but neither as terrible as many people argue. It always comes down to personal opinion though and perhaps expectations (mine were low). For me I rate it alongside f.ex. 'Independence Day 2' which I also enjoyed in part even though it had clear weaknesses compared to other films in this genre (including the better 'Independence Day').

I am glad I have now seen it, I never got to watch it at the cinema, but it's not good enough for me to buy it for my collection. Glad to have seen it though.

Alien 3 (1992 - Assembly Cut)

30 years ago today, I learned of a director named David Fincher. I know the studio gave him an enormous amount of grief while he was making this movie, I know he won't even refer to the movie by name... and still, I've always liked it (even the theatrical cut). I had no doubt in my mind Fincher was going to have an excellent career.

Happy Anniversary to one of the most divisive films ever made.
