Yep, that was the article I posted above.

Unfortunately, HanWay has since been sold to Cohen Media Group:

https://deadline.com/2022/08/hanway-...on-1235097253/

I hope that hasn't had an impact on the Arrow release.

Just to be clear, because it's a bit confusing, the movie has a mix of scenes:

Chinese characters talking to other Chinese characters (probably 80% of the film)

Chinese characters talking to English-speaking characters, like Peter O'Toole (probably 10% of the film)

Chinese characters talking to Japanese characters (probably 10% of the film)

In all of those scenes, only English is spoken, even scenes where none of the characters would be speaking English in real life.

Safe to assume Arrow in UK

Quote:

And the Arrow is the one I'll be going for.

Wonder if Criterion will be releasing it on UHD in North America.

Glad to have confirmation that this will be the new restoration, and not the one done a while back for the 3D conversion.

Really hoping this new release will include both theatrical and extended cuts, even if the latter uses the old master. The only place to find the extended version currently is the OOP Japanese release.

I remember being in Tokyo holding it in my hand but then saw how insane the price was so put it back.

There was actually a reissue available on amazon.co.jp for a while, for about $50-60 including shipping. I was hesitant to buy because of the price, but looks like it's gone out of stock as well. Kicking myself a bit now.

Watched the Arrow version last night.
I have no idea how the film is supposed to look but I can only say it looked terrific to me.
No encoding issues - good level of 4k detail, complimentary HDR.
The usual softness during the opticals - there weren't too many of those.
Class A release for me.

This is a nice set that complements for Criterion BD (for audio commentary + other extras) although i can't play the extended BD.

So thankful this set has no issues that affected previous Arrow releases like Donnie Darko, Dune and 12 Monkeys.

You can get it, play it, keep it or sell it - done. No worrying about contacting and begging stores for replacements, getting duplicate copies and waiting months for replacements. No worrying about the easy disk replacement request web-pages on surveymonkey that are only active for 5 to 7 months - what a RELIEF!
