Default 605 vs. 705

Is the 705 worth the extra 200 dollars that it costs over the 605. What does THX certified actually do?

I thought so.... see thx.com, but basically it defines lower distortion. There are threads on the heat problem with the 605, the 705 doesn't seem to have the same concerns. and an additional input

605 does have auto calibration. but in my opinion after set-up i always tweak it to my taste. nothing wrong with experimenting with any equipment you have to find what suits you.

Smile I owned the 705

the different between 605 and 705...

605 have 90 watss x 7

705 have 100 watts x 7

They both have all the audio capabilities but 705 have THX Surround EX, THX Selsct2, and more other THX surround modes. 705 can mix up with any format with THX... for example if movie plays in Dolby Digital 5.1, you can convert 5.1 into 7.1 surround mode to make it sound like Dolby Digital 7.1 with THX Natural 7.1, or you can mix up with dts Neo 6, Dolby Pro LogicIIx 7.1.

705 has more digital output and phono input instead of 605. If anything that is THX Certified, it been tested before it was named as THX Certified type of Receiver.

605 is cheapeat out there with Dolby TruHD and dts-hd.

705 is advanced and u paying for what you get, I bought mine from Crutchfield for about $585.00

Get that 705, you will love it and notice the different in some of your old music and movies.. even the new ones for sound with the help of THX.

Just got the 605 after getting numerous headaches.. since the only reason I wanted it was for the TRUE HD / DTS MA Decoder and the fact I got it for $310 was worth it for the low end model.. But can understand why someone would want the 705..

You mind sharing where you picked it up for $310? I've been waiting for this to drop from the high $300's on Amazon.

A friend of mine that deals directly with a dealer through Ebay... I was so shocked i couldn't pass it up and was brand new not used... I was ready to just get the one from Amazon for 389.99 a couple days before.. For that savings the 605 was well worth it!

Good buy man Onkyo is the way to go. I bought the 805 for the extra power and connectivity (especially added HDMI port).

Can't remember if the 605 had pre-outs but that was another big thing I wanted for future use.

Also, a big feature for me. The 705 upscales 5.1 audio to 7.1 audio. Which I think makes most movies in 5.1 audio sound alot better. The 605 doesn't have this capability.

I think that ability depends on what the source is. I'm using the 605, and I'm able to get Dolby 5.1 to play through all 7.1 speakers using the Dolby EX setting. Also, with DTS Core 5.1, I'm able to play it through all speakers using the DTS Neo6 setting.

The one thing I know the 605 won't do is extend 5.1 PCM to 7.1. I can't confirm that 705 will do this, but I've heard that it can. Can anyone confirm this?

^^ I cant confirm whether or not the 605 can split the 5.1 to 7.1 however I have seen the 705 split the 5.1 split to 7.1, just depends on the settings. Onky has great cust support, give them a call and ask.

Like I said earlier if u look up... I said you can use THX to convert 5.1 to 7.1. the first test i ever done to confirmed it working.. I put in the movie "300" on blu-ray and select the audio as PCM 5.1 for audio playback and set the 705 to THX Natural 7.1 sound mode and i can hear 7.1 working very well but if I set it to multi-channel, I can only hear 5.1...

Like i was saying I used THX to hear 7.1

*Dolby Pro Logic IIx is another 7.1 surround mode but i like THX Natural 7.1 much better.
