Default Aristocats Blu-ray / DVD Comparison

As I said, I created a comparison between the different editions of the Aristocats (Gold Collection / Special Edition DVD / HDTV rip / Special Edition Blu-ray)
* not all pictures are exact frames, but most are
* I also made two overlapping pictures to show off the difference between the current edition and the 1.33:1 Gold Collection edition. This is the first time I'm doing this so, please, bare with me

–––– Golden DVD –––– Special DVD ––––– HDTV –––––––– Blu-ray –––––––– Trailer

I must say the comparison looks good. The "Gold Collection" looks awful in comparison to the Special Edition, but the Blu-Ray blows both out of the water. Beautiful sharp lines! Coloring seems a wee bit faded ?

The have toned down yellows in the clouds and fur but no, they're not washed out.
The colour differences are really minor IMO, the one that bothers me is George's clothes. They changed his clothes from green to grey -.-

Ugh I hate it when they do that.
I'm expecting to see some soft shots here and there, but overall this is looking like a very solid, excellent transfer. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first Disney movie from the Xerox era (sketchy era) that gets a BD release..?

Yes and no. While it is the first BD which will have the distinctive "xerox look", Fox and the Hound was the first Xerox film on Blu-ray.

Oh yeah, I forgot, but indeed that one doesn't look "sketchy" if you'll forgive me the pun.
It was very striking to me that the one scene in which Edgar overhears the inheritance blabla, it looks more like a colored-in sketch than a fully finished piece of animation. But it has it's charms I guess. I'll definitely be picking this up come November.

They didn't crop anything, it was projected in widescreen when it was released. Although the aspect ratio was actually wrong than the one they used for the BD, for whatever reason.

Golden Col. DVD - Special Ed. DVD - Blu-ray
Thanks for the comparison! Very well done!... Both from you and Disney...

The BD seems to look great:

- very sharp, of course;
- the colors are actually pretty close to what they were on the Golden Collection; apparently the Special Edition colors were too bright;
- and the AR looks good too, I must say; I always prefer to see as much from the original artwork as possible. In this case you lose quite a bit from the top and bottom, while gaining a little on the left and right. But in the end, I think, it does the intentions justice. For example the scene at the end now really focuses on the two side by side watching the moon. In the 1.33:1 picture the focus is... well... everywhere and nowhere, if you know what I mean.
It also seems they took into account quite accurately what was important (leaving that on) and what wasn't (chopping it off), as the framing seems to shift accordingly.

Were there no glaring framing mistakes this time, like there were on the Fox and the Hound "trial and error"?...

Yes it was open matte. Original release format widescreen. Seems to be some argument on exact ratio but something close to 16x9.

Well, Disney blew it. I cannot believe how badly they butchered this title with DNR. Their DNR jobs on their previous classics was well done. This time it was a disaster.

Here's ten comparisons of the Blu-ray with the HDTV broadcast:

http://imgc.rauch.co.uk/901
http://imgc.rauch.co.uk/902
http://imgc.rauch.co.uk/903

http://imgc.rauch.co.uk/906
http://imgc.rauch.co.uk/907
http://imgc.rauch.co.uk/908
http://imgc.rauch.co.uk/909

You can see all detail has been stripped away. This is easily Disney's worst looking Blu-ray release yet. From The Fox and The Hound, Tarzan, and now this, something has happened at Disney's Blu-ray mastering department and it's not good.

I've canceled my pre-order. This is seriously disappointing that I'm now going to have a gap in my collection of Disney classics.

I completely disagree. I think it looks fantastic. I find it silly that you would skip this title over image quality which looks great.
